The Done List

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, I simply have to enlighten you. The Done List is something of my own devising, which has probably been done about a bazillion times over the past few millenia. Why? Because it’s one of those ideas that is too fantastically brilliant not to have been conceived before.

Still, I take some small pleasure in having thought of it myself. Okay, so I take a great deal of pleasure in the thought. I’m easy to please in that sense.

Enough of the self-congratulatory babbling, onto the definition. A Done List is a list of all that one accomplishes during the course of the day. How general or specific the items on the list are is purely at the discretion of the list maker.

Some days, I scribble down basic generalities. Some days, the bad days, I write every single solitary thing I do…in minute detail. Showered, Got Dressed, Put on Make-Up, Loaded Dishwasher, Unloaded Dishwasher, Fed and Clothed Children (x7), Did Not Scream at Children, Played with Children, Remembered to Eat Lunch, Cuddled Becca, Tickled Emma, etc…

At the end of the day I review the list (which I have conveniently left in plain sight in the hopes Neil will chance upon it – yes, I am that vain). I feel a warm glow as I peruse my many accomplishments. There is no To Do List with various items conspicuously not crossed off. I have two small children, and I easily fall into a pattern of self-abuse. Having a To Do List is nothing short of self-sabotage.

This IS a great idea! No more beating myself up over what I DIDN’T get done, now I can see what I actually did accomplish. Love it!

man, you make me laugh my butt off. But what a good idea. I think I am too much a slave to the ToDo List to ever change, but maybe the baby will put an end to that nonsense. (of course, I use my ToDo List as a motivator. And I’m okay with stuff not done. They’re long term projects often [like laundry. Always needs doing])
