Movie Review: Superman

by Kym on December 12, 2006

We rented a few movies this weekend and had a grand time laughing, groaning, wrinkling our respective noses (Pirates of the Caribbean – eww!), and watching the TV screen mildly enthralled. I enjoyed Superman the best out of the lot, and my preference surprised me.

The casting was superb. The Superman/Clark Kent dichotomy was carried off beautifully. I was also hugely impressed by the casting of the Lois Lane character. There was a “realness” to her that made the story seem less comic book-ish. Not that it didn’t have those elements! But the brilliant special effects more than compensated.

What really struck me while watching this movie, was what an awful deal evil henchmen get. They’ve got to do all the dirty work and inevitably are left behind to die while the villain makes good his escape in a helicopter (usually with a fluffy animal of some sort, white cats being the usual preference). Yes, they get to ride around in swanky aircraft and cruise on private yachts. They wear really cool clothes, have nifty tattoos, and get the privilege of exercising their machismo by beating up the hero. But is it really worth it? And do they ever ask themselves that question? Haven’t they seen the movies? Don’t they know what fate has in store for them?

That got me thinking about the evil henchmen in the real world. Same questions. Is a glam lifestyle and getting to bully the good guys really worth the risk of being blown up, fed to pirahnas, wrestled out of airplanes and plummeting to their deaths, etc…?

I really don’t understand this world of ours. But then, I’m glad I don’t. If I did I might feel obligated to do something about it.

As much as I adore Will Turner, I was not terribly pleased with the last 20 minutes of Pirates of the Carribean.

They went a little something like this:

inner voice: Dude, my butt is getting seriously numb.

inner voice 2: It is. Probaby because you’re pregnant. This movie seems ridiculously long. Check your watch

inner voice: Stop blaming everything on the pregnancy. The glowy hands probably have lost their glow.

inner voice 2: glance furtively until there’s better light, and angle the face to the screen.

inner voice: how can this be? we’ve been sitting here for about 2 hours now and we’re nowhere near the end of the movie

barbossa: yaaaaaaarrrrr!!! I made y’all some apple cobbler!

run credits

inner voices: WHAT THE??? Are you kidding me?

Not having seen this latest Superman, I couldn’t comment on that. . . but I will agree wholeheartedly with nurse pickles on the whole “what the” of the Pirates movie . . . let’s just hope that the 3rd one is a good one . . . and that enough people weren’t totally turned off of the whole PotC franchise to actually go and WATCH said 3rd movie . . . *rolls eyes*

Love your last line; definitely a great cop-out. :-) And I think Superman is definitely on my must-see list!

I really liked PotC 2. But then I’m just so entranced by Johnny Depp & Orlando Bloom that they could recite the Constitution for 2 1/2 hours and I’d still sit there and eat popcorn and never notice how much time was going by.
