Happy Habits

by Kym on January 25, 2007

So I’m sitting down to write up a post about nothing in particular. I set a goal to blog every other day and by golly, I’m going to do it! Even if I’m so lacking in inspiration that I use phrases like “by golly.”

Life is pretty happy right now. I’ve taken Smart Habit Saturday very much to heart and, not content with adding one habit per week, I’ve been sneaking all sorts of new habits into my daily routine. This week I added making the bed every morning, laying out the girls pj’s and clothes for the next day in the afternoon, setting the table for breakfast before going to bed, and washing my face morning and night (no more collapsing in bed with my make-up still on!).

I feel like I need to take a deep breath after sharing that list. They’re pretty small things, but they’re adding up to a lot of happiness. And having these small things under control is helping me tackle the larger projects. I cleaned out the fridge last night. And this morning I scrubbed the kitchen floor. I’ve been getting the dishes done immediately after a meal instead of waiting for hours and having to go at them with a hammer and chisel to get the hardened food off. I’ve cleaned out drawers and organized paperwork. Next thing you know I’ll actually start answering e-mails! Good heavens!

I like to say that I’m turning over a new leaf but that it’s very heavy. Lately though, it doesn’t feel quite so heavy. Taking small reasonable steps towards my goal of being super-mom/wife/friend, etc…has been an eye-opening experience. It’s frightening and joyful all in the same moment. With hope comes the fear of despair.

I’m afraid that the happiness I’m currently feeling is transitory. I’m so lazy by nature, that it’s equally natural to suppose I’ll slip right back into my procrastinatory ways at any moment.

But then I think, what the heck, enjoy the happiness and ignore the feeling of impending doom!

Whoa! You certainly had a lot to write for someone who didn’t have anything to say! :) Glad your getting things done (one small step at a time), that’s great!

Enjoy the happiness, you are entitled to it!

And don’t think of it as transitory. Instead think of being lazy and “procrastinatory” as the transitory states :) !! We all have them.

Your making me tired just reading about all your new smart habits. I like your saying about turning over a new leaf, but’s it real heavy! Can I borrow that?

Just don’t overburden yourself and then get down because you can’t do it all. THat is what happens to me!

You go girl!

I love the heavy leaf metaphor too.

I’ve been meaning to clean out my fridge too. Oh, for about a year now…

Good luck on embracing the happiness.

Sorry I can’t get your email address to work or I would just send you this…

I wanted you to know that I nominated your blog for an annual Share the Love blog award. I chose the “Most thought-provoking” category because without fail when I read your posts you always get me pondering something new. Thanks.
