While They Were Sleeping…

by Kym on March 28, 2007

Okay, so the title isn’t really all that applicable, but I just love ripping off movie titles and twisting them around into post titles. My girls are sleeping and therefore, I am blogging.

I had to share these cute pictures of Emma “helping” me yesterday. The best bit was that she was singing a Cinderella song while she did it.

Next time she spills strawberries on my floor, I might just have her do this:
But since she only has a one minute attention span, it would quickly turn into this:

So we had a nicely productive day yesterday. I got my kitchen cleaned (including the floor!) with a wee bit of help from Emma. It was fun, actually. We romped around on our hands and knees, each with a damp cloth, scrubbing at the sticky bits, picking the hard crusty bits off using our fingernails (yeuch!), and giggling as we made funny faces at each other.

Who knew cleaning could be such fun?

As part of my decision to refocus my priorities, I sat down with a pad of lined paper and one of my favourite ball point pens. I pondered the empty sheet for a minute, then divided it into three columns; Daily Tasks, Weekly Tasks, and Monthly Tasks. I then assigned weekly tasks to each day of the week, and scheduled the monthly tasks on my calendar.

It’s a work in progress, of course, since I just started yesterday, but I’m excited almost beyond reason about it. This only makes sense if you have some idea of how incredibly lazily I’ve been living my life up to this point. We’re talking serious levels of sluggishness here. My life as a homemaker and mother has been chaotic and disorganized. I’ve had no daily or weekly schedule, and have more or less just muddled my way through with no clear idea of where I’m going or how to get there. There always seems to be so much to do, that I end up giving up before I’ve begun.

And so I had fun getting organized yesterday. Organizing is, of course, its own reward, but bragging about it makes it so much more enjoyable. Here’s a sampling…

Mondays: Clean out Fridge and Reorganize Pantry. Make Meal Plan and Shopping List.

Tuesdays: Deep Clean Kitchen and Wash Floors.

Wednesdays: Dusting, Reorganizing Girls’ Bedrooms, and One Big Project.

Thursdays: Vacuum Entire House.

Fridays: Clean Bathrooms (All Three of Them!).

Saturdays: Laundry Catch Up Day (get done what didn’t get done during the week).

Tasks like laundry and vacuuming are to be done on a daily basis along with other daily tasks, but days are alotted to give them a special focus.

Monthly tasks include things like developing pictures, visiting teaching, family council, and reviewing finances.

I’ve even pulled out my “Family Planner” and am keeping it next to my bed so I can review it every evening and morning (thanks for the idea Lara)!

I think that as I make better use of my time, I’ll find that I have more of it. I don’t see giving up my computer addiction as a noble sacrifice I’m making for my kids, I see it as a necessary step to changing deeply ingrained bad time management habits, and becoming a person who has time for her hobbies, instead of stealing time for them.

I don’t know if any of that makes sense, but I’m happy, so that’s good enough for me.

Your thoughts are much like my own. Almost scary actually! I could have said all the same things you’ve said, not as eloquently of course. I really need to sit down and prioritize and figure out a schedule that works for me too.

becoming a person who has time for her hobbies, instead of stealing time for them.

Sounds like a great goal to me!

i have tried to do the same thing several times. sometimes things stick and sometimes they don’t. now that i’m not teaching piano anymore my day seems much more open and i accomplish more. but my floors still are neglected, my bedroom is still a work in progress, and after living in this house for almost three months, i’m finally feeling more organized and more in control of what i do during my day. i would love to hear updates on how you do. i’m sure it will give me motivation to continue doing it on my end. good luck! i hope you can stick to it! it is hard to do.

Way to go, Kim! :) I’m a list maker, and so that “Daily/Weekly/Monthly” priorities list sounds great! I like the “ONE BIG PROJECT” line you have for Wednesdays . . . it sounds so important! :) I can’t wait to see what they are!
Way to grow! ;)

Being organized and having a routine really help me to stay on top of things … sometimes I think I need to be a little more spontaneous with the kids. But then again, sometimes I need to remind myself that it has been awhile since I truly cleaned the bathroom :)!!

I am so happy that you have found something to help you out. And although Amanda already pointed this us, I love how you said you need to become “a person who has time for her hobbies, instead of stealing time for them.”

So true!

Yeah Emma, it’s all fun and games until hair get turned into a dirty towel!.

Organization is the goddess of…ah, alas, I can’t think of anything.

Let’s say “of goodiness” for now.

Amanada – I’m so relieved that it resonated with you and didn’t disgust you! ~lol~ I was seriously worried that I’d be shunned!
Terina – You’re so right…I’ve tried to make changes before and had varying levels of success. I think it’s all about how badly you want to change.
Kate – I’m a list maker/list loser. It’s a constant problem! ~lol~
Lucy – I’m just feeling silly that it took me this long, you know?
NCS – Love the word “goodiness”! It fits just right, somehow.

My daughter loooves to help me clean. Why she can’t apply that affection toward cleaning her own room I’ll never know..

Kimberly,

This is a good plan.

The best advice I can give is to give yourself some “give”. Just because let’s say the girls seemed to want snuggle time on Wednesday after cleaning their room and you didn’t get to teh “big project” does not make you a failure.

Dirty floors and projects will still be there on Sat morning when you’re attacking whatever laundry is left ya know?

Be spontaneous too….and take an afternoon off and enjoy one of your hobbies AND the girls ya know?

Since I’m about to embark on the “I stay home all day and can’t account for what I don’t get done.” phase, I’m trying to start off on the right foot with my lists too. For me, May, June & July will be about getting the apartment packed and ready to move.
August will be about unpacking the house from the move and maybe by September I can enjoy some of my “time off”.

Enjoy….and indulge.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record – Emma is just so darn CUTE!
Off to fold clothes – boo hiss, actually it is a task teh kdis enjoy helping with. We throw all the clothes in a pile on the floor and they pick out which are thiers and place them in separate piles, then help put thier folded clothes away in the draw.

Burg – Alas, I fear the same will hold true with Emma.
Angie – That’s fabulous advice! Definitely important to keep flexibility in the mix, otherwise it’s too easy to get discouraged.
Strauss – You can play that old record any time! Good for you for teaching ‘em young!
