To Sleep Perchance to Dream…
by Kym on May 22, 2007
…and perchance to forget that Emma ripped open a freezer gel pack with her teeth, dying portions of my lovely new bedspread bright blue.
Fear not, she is alive and unscathed. Though perhaps emotionally traumatized by the sight of her mother lovingly fingering the marred quilty softness of her most recent home decor love affair, tears springing to her eyes, fists clenching and unclenching in a spasmodic fashion.
The dryer is currently humming away, and I live in hope, likely vain hope, that my quick tossing of the quilt in the washing machine may have saved some small portion of its beauty.
And as soon as that lovely little dinging sound resounds, I’m going to bundle myself up in my warm stained blanket, and sleep for as long as Emma and Becca will let me.
And I’ll try not to cry as swirly blue patterns swim before my sleep deprived eyes. It’s only cotton, Kim. It’s only cotton.
~Update~ I’m no longer seeing red because I don’t see any blue. Whoohoo!

Oh, my dear. I feel your pain. My mother would always say in teary frustration,
“I can’t have anything nice!”
I have adopted the phrase, now being that I am a mother of young children myself.
My mother still can’t have anything nice. She has her grandkids over too much.

Deep breaths, hon. Deep breaths.
I hope the quilt makes it alive. If not, well, you can go shopping again, right?

It is so easy to think this is just cotton and this is just an expendable object, but it is quite another thing to act that way.
**Hugs**
I hope the washing machine and dryer will resurrect your beautiful bedspread!

If the stain does not come out, you may want to try some Oxy stuff on it, it may help since you’ve already put it through the dryer. All my best!

Ugh, that bites. It is so hard to get new stuff like that and then have it be “marked” so soon! I hope everything turns out O.K.

Not to worry my dear….the gel should be water soluable….take a deep breath…..you should be shiny and new in no time.

I thought about buying new sheets (I hate ours, although I registered for them for a wedding gift, so it’s my own fault). But DS has taken highlighter to the dust ruffle, so I am hesitating. And your story (magnificently told, by the way) makes me reconsider completely. No wonder my mom was content with her old bedspreads.
I sure hope the stain comes out for you.

When my second daughter was two, she scribbled all over my new, beautiful comforter with a black permanent marker! I know your pain, Kim.
To this day I keep permanent markers up high, and slightly freak when I see one in a child’s reach!

Annie – I’m seriously thinking about putting a lock on the bedroom door so I can have one room to feel sane in.
Brillig – Alas, no. We live in a teeny tiny town. Picked up the quilt set during our last trip. The next one? Months and months away.
Lucy – Your hope was not in vain!
Deanne – I need to get some of that stuff! My mom swears by it too.
Thea – My heart is still beating a little fast. I didn’t get the courage to look until just recently. It’s okay. It’s okay…
SoDak – Thank heaven you were right!
Beth – Emma can reach so much more now, it does make having nice things a bit of a gamble.
Kate – “Broken in”, I like that expression!
James – He’s too clever to be a complete angel. =)
Chick – Thanks for understanding!
PJ – That’s the sort of thing that can traumatize a mother for life!
Jenny – ~singin’~ “When will we ever learn? When will we eeeeever learn?”

I knew that I had become my own mother the day I hysterically shrieked at my cowering children, “YOU DESTROY EVERYTHING THAT I LOVE!”
They broke an entire collection of Hummel collectible plates I inherited that took two decades to put together. Guess what? I superglued day and night until I got the mangled bits back together and they’re back up on my display shelf. There’s no monetary value but the sentimental value still holds.

This is one of my favorite blog categories–I need to come up with a name for it–something like “lessons you’ll never fully learn until being a parent”.
A seemingly simple thing, a messed up quilt, and everyone has major sympathy because we’ve all been there–the thought of poor elastic obsessively gluing those pieces together!!!
Thanks, Kimmy!
And how’s the sucking machine going? any verdict yet?

This is useful information. Considering Casey and her “ripping things apart with her teeth” stage is right around the corner.
Yesterday we ended up with a bag of mini powdered donuts all over the living room floor and dropping them wasn’t enough..she had to stomp on them while I was in the bathroom for 5 seconds.
Lucky for me..I have a newer vacuum..however…her brother…was less than thrilled when he arrived home..considering..they were his donuts.

So glad you were able to rescue your bedspread from certain doom. I would [will] be heartbroken if [when] my little guy ruins my favorite white duvet.
