Review – J. Scott Savage’s Farworld

by Kym on January 29, 2008

Once upon a time there was a girl. A pretty dull, average, ordinary girl. The kind that could easily blend into a crowd. Heck, there was even something almost Clark Kent-esque about her. She was almost too normal.

If you imagined her to be the sort to lead a secret double life you’d actually be right.

This girl? Had an incredibly amazing superpower the likes of which has never been seen by man or beast or cheese. You see, this girl could read. Fast. She could read two or three books in a day, and the more she read the hungrier for words she became. There was no satisfying her, and the local librarians lived in fear of her daily visits because of the sheer quantity of books she would check out.

One day she got a book in the mail, which wasn’t the oddest thing in the world as she and Amazon.ca were good buds, but this book wasn’t from Amazon. It was from a publisher. And it contained something our sweet heroine had never before beheld.

An Advanced Reader Copy.

She trembled with delight as she tore open the envelope and held the precious creation in her hands, stroking the brightly coloured cover with a look of almost frightening intensity in her eyes.

She read the book and she literally did not put it down until she was done. Okay, maybe she put it down once when she had to pee. Anyway, the book? It was good. Very good even.

It transported her to another world in a deliciously thorough way. The events and images in the book played across the movie screen of her mind as she lost herself in the creatively crafted tale. She identified with the main characters in a very real way. She paused a few times to reflect on the sweetness of a fantasy book that was clean, not overly gory, and yet so full of action and adventure that as she turned the last page she felt a keen sense of disappointment.

After she finished it she mentally compiled a list of her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who would enjoy this book as a Christmas present.

And then she read it again.

Oh, and then one more time.

The local librarians didn’t see her for three straight days. They phoned to see if she’d died or something, but no, she was just lost in the loveliness of a good story.

And because she’s really nervy and egomaniacal, she decided to review the book on her blog and insist that everyone she knows buy it when it comes out this September. Available for Preorder people!
