The McMahon Meme

by Kym on March 18, 2008

The lovely David McMahon, poses a weekly question on his blog, asking interested readers to post their answers in the form of a blog post. I’m always meaning to and never seem to remember in time, and I saw one gal had the same problem and had the brilliant idea of turning David’s questions into a meme.

So I stole the idea. Hee hee.

Who REALLY rules the TV remote control in your house?

On the rare occasions when we watch TV (we’re more DVD watchers around here), I’m usually at the helm. Neil only ever has the TV on as background noise when he’s working on his laptop, so the choice of what to watch is usually mine. If I choose something he disapproves of he just has his evening bath a wee bit earlier.

Does your family read your blog?

My mum has been known to read on occasion. I’m not sure if anyone else does. If so, they haven’t mentioned it. Hullo? Anyone out there? Leave a comment, already!

Do you get enough leisure time?

Too much, really. My life isn’t a struggle for more leisure, it’s a struggle for less. Yes, poor Kim. Let’s all take a moment to pity her…

How efficiently (or inefficiently) would your household function without batteries?

The TV remote is the only battery operated device on which we depend to any degree. Family cuddle time (watching a movie together) might be a little trickier but actually, I think we’d do fairly well.

Do you wear denim?

Yup! A nicely fitting pair of jeans is key to my happiness in life. I do prefer a nice pair of dress slacks though. Jeans are just a smarter choice for mommy wear. When Neil met me he told me that he liked how I dressed (nice slacks, cute sweater tops and blouses). He said there was something ladylike about me, as I didn’t go for the t-shirt and jeans or sweatpants sort of looks. Poor guy. How disillusioned he must feel now.

Have you ever broken a New Year’s resolution?

Nope! I’m clever enough not to make any.

Have you ever sworn at a computer?

Define “sworn.” Muttered curses, perhaps, but nothing so strong as to be called a swear. I’m annoyingly prudish when it comes to language usage.

What was the best Christmas present you ever received?

A massage at the local health spa. Mmmmm….

Have you ever answered or made a call on a cellphone while you were in a toilet? (Or even wanted to and thought better of it!)

Sure have! Only with really close friends though, ’cause otherwise it’d be weird. Or wait, would it make more sense not to put close friends through that and only do it to telemarketers? Hmmm…

When did you last write or receive a real snail-mail letter (you know, in an addressed envelope)?

I sent a package to my lovely Holly Dolly a few weeks back. And I’m about to send out a pile more. Prezzies for all!

How would you cope if you had no way to use the Internet for a week?

That assumes I’d actually cope. Goodness. I’d probably have to replace the addiction in some fashion. I think I’d ransack the local library and lose myself in some of my favourite sci-fi/fantasy series. The time would fly by. Right?

Do you have ESP?

Heck, I barely function on an average level, never mind transceding it. Definitely a no to that one.

What is your favourite television addiction?

The Office is definitely the first that comes to mind.

Have you ever Googled yourself?

That really does sound kind of dirty, doesn’t it? And yes, much to my shame, I have. I was curious to know how easy to find I am on Ye Olde Internets. Pretty easy if you know my married name, next to impossible if you’ve only got my maiden name to go on. Kim Miller? Yeah…pretty common.

Were you a teenage rebel?

Ahahahahah! It is to laugh! Ha! Umm…no. Not remotely. I was a very boring teen. I didn’t go on my first date till I was twenty, even. I did rebel a bit when I went to University. I hated University. A lot. The classes were huge and impersonal and I felt so completely lost. So…I just didn’t go to class. It was a really odd time in my life. My parents were completely at a loss, as I remember. Why I’d paid to take classes I then didn’t attend they simply couldn’t understand. Heck, I don’t understand either. I was pretty messed up back then.

As a child, did you ever consider running away from home?

Oh my yes, quite often. I had a very well defined sense of justice from a very young age. “It’s not fairy fair!” was one of my first complete sentences. As the oldest child I often felt put upon. I’d get in trouble if my younger siblings did something they weren’t supposed to on my watch, yelled at as a group when I’d had nothing to do with whatever shenanigans they were up to (I was always in my room reading a book, after all), and my younger siblings delighted in tormenting their boring bookish sister. I did leave once, but I only made it a block before I remembered that I wasn’t allowed to cross the street by myself. My plan to flee to Grandma’s house was, alas, doomed from the start.

What do you like most about blogging?

I should say the friendships, because they’re pretty spectacular and I wouldn’t have gotten hooked on blogging were it not for that. Really though, it’s about the ego stroking for me. I had a pretty rough time growing up on account of being the hypersensitive takes everything to heart type, so my self-esteem was definitely lacking before I started blogging. The support and encouragement I’ve received here in my little corner of the web has been invaluable in shaping me into the more confident woman I’m slowly becoming.

Who was your best childhood friend?

Now this, is a bit of a sore spot with me. I didn’t really have a best friend until I hit grade six. Her name is Roselyn and we recently reconnected on Facebook (she’s as lovely as I remember). I had a rough time as a kid, not having that best friend bond. I took it as further proof of all that was wrong and horrible with me. Roselyn helped with that, a bit. We had a lovely two years as good friends before we moved away, but in that time I never managed to let go of the uncertainty enough to think she could enjoy me as much as I enjoyed her. Ahh…how sad, eh?

Hollywood’s knocking on your door, to offer you top billing in a studio blockbuster, alongside any movie star of your choice. Whom do you choose?

Anthony Hopkins, without a doubt. I think he’d be fascinating to work with.

Which toy was your childhood favourite?

Lego without a doubt. I loved building all sorts of funky houses and playing out elaborate stories with the lego people. We had a rule in our house that when you built something you could keep it for three days and then it had to be dismantled so the other kids could have a chance to use those pieces. My enormous constructs suffered all sorts of “accidents” because of their tendency to use every available piece. Usually, the cat was claimed to have been involved.

Do you say “I love you” often enough?

Too much so, perhaps. I wonder if it loses the fullness of its meaning, being tossed about in a casual fashion like that. I try to use other words to express my love as well. Offering compliments and praise, that sort of thing.

Do you have an embarrassing relative?

Are yo
u kidding? I am the embarrassing relative!

GREAT meme! Got me thinking about what my questions would be.

And FWIW, I’m glad you’ve found bloggy happiness. For purely selfish reasons.

I think being the embarrassing relative is a very good thing, because when you do something normal, I love the look of stumped.
Great questions to answer. I might steal this too. HEHEHE

great meme. I love that the questions are so diverse.
And I could really go for a massage right now. I know what I’ll ask for this year!

gotta love that david!

now, you may not have esp, but i knew you were going to say that. so i think *i* have it. . .

my brain crashes when i get to the no-internet-for-a-week question. it refuses to acknowledge that as a sentence.

unless it’s a death sentence.

see what i did there? oh my goodness i’m so punny.

not.

instead, you should mentally replace this with a comment from my post which you found funny. :)

Lego was/ is my favourite too! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this post, Kimberly. And thank you, too, for the kind words as well.

a great post!

how well i relate to the wearing of jeans – my poor sweetie. he said the same thing that yours said to you about liking the way i dressed when we met. but that was when we used to go out a lot. what he didn’t know was that i was a jeans and t-shirt junkie at home :O) it’s great for being a mom but it also helps me fit in at school where the oldest are more than 10 years younger than i. perhaphs i could spruce it up just a bit now and then. he’d like that.

Ahhh I love this Kim. It was a mini interview with you. We were sooo alike as kids, in the sensitive, bookish and shy way. And I’m so glad you blog. xx

Oh, and will you email me your address if you’re ok with that? I got you a prezzie. I saw it and thought of you.

What a great meme! Are there really people out there who don’t ever wear denim? Really?? I just can’t imagine it…

I love you! I love learning more fun things about you…

Oh Kim. I love you. And I love the Office too! (It’s coming back on April 10!)

Great MeMe. I like learning more about you. I personally think you can never say “I love you” too much. At least people won’t leave this earth not having an idea of where they stood with you.

i was a bookish good girl, too. i guess i still am.
love david’s blog and i’m glad you did one of his memes. i’ll get around to doing one eventually.
my husband said something before we got married about how i was always so “put together.” ahh, now he has seen the real me. or at least the mommy-to-four real me. some days a shower is as far as i get in terms of putting myself together! ok, i do get dressed. but not always well!

I got a spa gift once, for Mother’s Day. It was one of the best gifts ever!

Okay, I’m going to repeat you “this is almost freaky” how many answers I would have answered quite similarly! Especially the one about blogging. I think the last year and a half of blogging has totally played a major role in my becoming the “real” me. I’m realizing that people like me for me. Or they lie well : )

And I LOVED lego too : ) Now I’m excited because my girls are getting pink lego that I won from the UBP. I wish I had pink lego when I was a kid!
