A Happy Accident

by Kym on April 18, 2008

Did you ever do something wonderful by accident?

I hate it when I do that.

Not the wonderful bit, that’s quite lovely and I like the warm fuzzy glow that comes with that. It’s the accidental bit that kind of rankles. There’s no opportunity for self-inflicted ego stroking. No preening, strutting or knuckle polishing. It’s a let down sometimes, that realization of having done something quite grand but having not meant to and therefore not being able to take proper credit.

If you hadn’t guessed yet that I had an experience with this phenomenon recently then yours is perhaps not the keenest of intellects (nicely done, eh? Insult the readers, that’ll keep them coming back, yes).

It happened this morning at a time that I can’t quite determine as the power was knocked out last night for an indeterminate period of time (it was flashing 12:38 on my alarm clock, if that’s any help).

Becca was having a good sleep in, but I heard Emma cry out from her room and I ran down the stairs, jumped the last few as is my habit, and let myself into her room. I didn’t scoop her up and carry her to the breakfast table though. I climbed into her bed and gave her a good snuggle and had a bit of a chat. And then we read some books.

This might not seem all that wonderful to you, but Emma was pretty dazzled by the experience. She put one of her little hands on either side of my face, gave me her most earnest of looks and said, “Mommy? I love you sooooooooooooooooooo much!”

There were that many o’s. Really.

And I earned that love completely by accident this morning. It makes me want to do more to earn it on purpose.

my intellect is AMAZINGLY keen because i knew you were going to have a happy accident when i saw the post title. does that make me a genius?

there were so many o’s there that surely you were cheered by them. were they cheery-os? is that why you didn’t need breakfast straight away?

oh that is just the worst ever. okay i’m going to bed now, hanging my head in shame.

That was so cute. I love that, when they look at you like you’re a super hero or an angel or something. Sighhhh. x

That’s it. Enough of the insults. I’m NEVER coming back. Hhmpf.

Oh wait, but this was such a nice story. Maybe I’ll give you one more chance…

I love it when my kids have nightmares, because I KNOW I’ll get to practice my best mom skills. You expressed this in such a wonderful way.
