I have a few ideas swirling around in my head that I’ve been itching to put into words, but the day was chaotic and the night was filled with…I can hardly believe it but…playing chaperone. To my seventy-nine year old grandmother.
She’s visiting us this week, and there happens to be a seventy-nine year old widower of our acquaintance whom we decided to have over for dinner tonight.
It’s 10:15pm and they’re still chuckling away together. Neil slunk off over an hour ago (the rat), and I’ve been sitting there trying to laugh with them and not give away the fact that I would rather be writing. I had to pee though and slipped upstairs for a few minutes. They? Did not notice me go.
Oh dang. It got quiet suddenly. Should I rush down there? No…wait…that could be misconstrued. I know, I’ll have a sudden fit of coughing as I go down the stairs, just in case.
Gah!
Worst thing is, I’m worried they’re going to keep me up past my bedtime!

That’s awesome. My mom tells the story of when my widowed great-grandmother came to our house acting like a teenager over meeting a high school classmate who had been widowed too. I was in their wedding a few months later. She was in her 80′s, and I was 6 or 7. They were in love. I was happy about that, but not about the stupid daffy duck hat thingy I had to wear in my hair.

actually, it’s kinda cute.
the way to deal with old people? tell them wimbledon is on in the television room. they’ll *slowly* make their way there, and then you can just let them watch while you nap.
