The Self-Sustaining Ego
by Kym on May 9, 2008

I feel obligated to report the death of one Kimberly Miller VanderHorst. Her body has been snatched by forces as yet undetermined, and has been possessed for an indeterminate period of time.
Not much has been determined except that not much has been determined.
It is uncertain when the switch was made, but the evidence is quite staggering. Her former characteristics, namely timidity, poor self-esteem, and paranoia, have been replaced by raving egomania, adventurousness, aggrandizement of the social calendar and a flagrant disregard for grammar.
What has become of the shy young girl who used to blush at the merest hint of praise is not yet known. Anonymous sources confess it to be no great loss, but concerns that the earth is about to be invaded by alien body snatchers are growing in intensity. Is this the beginning of the end for the human race?
When questioned on the matter, Kimberly merely shrugged, grinned a bit and replied, “Hey. It could be worse. And I’ve got this blog, you know, and the comments. Well, they keep the beast fed, so to speak.”
She then grinned again, an eerie sort of grin, and walked away. Leaving an awkward silence in her wake.

Hmm . . . It almost feels wrong to intrude into the awkward silence . . . but I’ll do it anyways . . . gotta feed the monster and all! ;)

Did someone order some praise with a side of validation?
Because we deliver.
Great post.

You might want to get the pipes checked in that new house of yours. There’s something strange in the water.
I’m just sayin’.

Glad to keep beasty full! I think your beast and my beast would be good friends : ) Cause I TOTALLY know what you are sayin’!! I’ve gone from being very shy and not liking any attention being drawn to me to being vain and posting dumb pictures of myself on the internet just for the comments. Why?!? I think it’s an epidemic.

It’s not aliens. It’s the same woman who’s finally realizing just how AMAZING she always has been.
Way to come into your own, Kim.

Well since your being adventurous, its perfect. Nothing is more fun than seeing a positive change and you can’t put your finger on the- exactly how it happened moment.
Carry on egomaniac.. ;)

Ah… at least your beast is fed on comments and not on village children or something… that would be a tad on the disturbing side.
:)

Here are a few bones for the beast:
I LOVE the Scrabble photo. Makes me want to play RIGHT NOW. (But I have to finish cleaning!)
I love your name. Sounds like a heroine in a Victorian novel.
I once overheard a conversation that I just loved. An older man, 60-ish, very successful, said to his dinner chums, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” In this case it sounds like change is a good thing, and growth is happening. Just make sure you keep that beast under control. (Think: Lord of the Rings — As long as the blog and its comments don’t turn into “mmmyyyy pppressssscioussss” then you’re okay!) :)

ermm . . . strike “monster” from the first comment . . . replace with “beast” . . . read the post wrong . . . *blushes in embarassment and slinks away*

I guess everyone tells you you look like Stephenie Meyer, right. Is there a connection? Sister, or something?
Oh, and if you like Temple photographs, then check out my blog on Monday as I’m posting about a superb photographer who is giving away THE best Salt Lake Temple screen saver set of 220photos free! So spread the word–they are gorgeous!

Well, I did like the old Kimberly really a LOT. But I think I could definitely strike up a friendship with anyone who has a flagrant disregard for grammar.

Dearest Kimmy or whoever you are now,
Having met the very funny, charming, and outgoing Kimberly, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE for me to believe there was ever a shy and quiet one. Somehow I sense I would have loved her, and you, and the character the two parts of you create… :-D

Love the post and I hope that other Kimberly stays missing.
Does that say I love Leroy next to the word Ego in the picture?

Wooooooooooooooooot! All hail the flagrant disregard for grammar.
Well, you know, Awkward Silence can always go start its own blog.

I can attest to the shy retireing Kim and can truthfully say the new Kim is much better and happier.
Happy, as always, to feed the beast!
