Weight Loss Tuesday

by Kym on August 26, 2008

Because I’m too impatient to wait till tomorrow simply to be alliterative.

I? Am getting skinny. Oh, and healthy. Yes, it’s all about the health. And yes, I love myself as I am and all that good stuff. Health body image, yes yes…right, with that disclaimer in place, mooooving on.

Speaking of mooing, the fridge hasn’t moo’ed at me in months now. It used to quite frequently. Becca’s barnyard magnet set will randomly come out with an animal sound every now and again, often with disturbing side-effects. Like weeping. And scowling angrily at the fridge periodically.

I really am a nut.

These days, the fridge tends to Baa or Neigh instead. Considering I ascribed meaning to the moos and oinks, perhaps I should do the same with the other sounds. Really though? It’s nice to walk past the fridge without fear anymore. Sometimes? I even strut a little bit. Only when Neil’s not home though, as he’s an eye-roller and that would totally kill my strutting buzz.

Anyway, my family got together and got me a Wii and a Wii fit for my birthday. I love it. It may even be said that I’m a wee bit too fond of the balance board icon that greets me each day, asks how I’m doing, offers advice and encouragement. My favourite bit though? Is the ping sound.

Ping-ping-ping! As I do the step aerobics. The screen lights up with basic pings for “OK” steps, and super pings for “PERFECT!” steps. As I get into the rhythm properly, the super pings dominate. Instant gratification. I’m all about the instant gratification. Which is how I got so darn fat in the first place, of course. So I ping along, chafing whenver my steps get out of synch and the pings become boring “OK” pings instead.

I am a lazy perfectionist, which makes for a lot of misery, let me tell you. This system is appealing to the perfectionist in me to such a degree that my lazy side is slowly being smothered. Sounds a bit gruesome put that way, but I’m all in favour of murdering the part of me that has held me back from the joy of self-mastery.

I stepped on the scale this morning and when I stepped off I danced a little jig. A little happy dance over the quantifiable representation of my renewed resolved to be kinder to myself (3 pounds down from last week!). To make choices that truly do lead to happiness.

As I recently observed, “there’s a world of difference between doing what you feel like doing and doing what will make you happy.”

I love the happy numbers on the scale instead of the ugly ones. And happy ones are anything that is smaller than the last time I stood there.

I am down 5 lbs last week. The only thing I did different with my eating was this- I started drinking a soy and whey shake each day after exercising- 8 oz vanilla soy milk mixed with 1 scoop of chocolate whey powder. Tastes great and forces your body to use the stored fat somehow I guess.

So HOW did you manage to transfer those three pounds down here to me?!?

Yay for you, and well…
Okay–next topic.

I love the last line: There’s a world of difference between doing what you feel like doing and doing what will make you happy. Sheer brilliance, that.

Hooray! Goodbye, pounds!

And I’d been wondering about Wii…I thought the Wii Fit was just a joke–really–getting healthy by playing video games? Riiiiight. But it works, huh? And you’re liking it, are you? Hmm…perhaps I should rethink my skepticism…

Wii Fit sounds like a blast! Congrats on the three lost pounds.

Yaaaaay. I love the buzz of achievement. And I want a wii fit. I will have one, and a wii, but in the meantime, I will live vicariously through yours. Mwah.

GREAT Job! I really need a wii fit!

Yeah, that would solve all my problems, right?

by JustRandi on August 26, 2008 at 11:25 pm. #

Whoo-hoo! Way to go! That iPod is almost yours!

I’m a half pound away from delicious frozen yogurt yumminess!

And I’m so jealous of your Wii Fit. I’m hoping I get one for Christmas.

Yay for you! I might have to try that when the baby is born to lose all my “who cares I”m pregnant” weight I’ve gained… sigh… And I agree with you, sometimes it’s way too hard to do what you know will make you happy!

Thank you thank you thank you for this inspiring post! The last sentence means so much to me as I’m trying a few new goals myself.
GOOD FOR YOU for sticking to it – I’m glad to hear you are loving your Wii Fit, we’re thinking of getting a Wii for Christmas and of course the Fit is on top of the “Must Have” list.

I’m doing a happy little jig for you right now : ) I’m so excited for you and it totally inspired me to get off my diminishing buttox (from lack of exercise) and go and do something that will make me feel like I’ve gone and done something : ) I’m so proud of you.

by Erin on August 27, 2008 at 2:19 am. #

I am so dang proud of you Kim. This is such great news. My daughter has wanted a Wii. I am now convinced that we might both enjoy a little more ping in our lives.

What a way to move passed something that has not been kind to you. I love this new beginning I hear in you. It is so great. Keep on pinging. I love the sound of that too. :)

See…I told ya that you would like it. I love the little board that tells me how much I rock too until he tells me it’s been too long since I’ve been there and then..not so much. Just wait till you unlock the boxing. Talk about addicted. Much cheaper than therapy.

by Tonya on August 27, 2008 at 3:10 am. #

I love Wii Fit. I also got one for my birthday and it’s probably one of the first times I’m addicted to something that’s good for me.

Hurrah for the Wii! I have wanted to get Wii Fitness… they had it at Costco at one time, but I haven’t seen it there again. Perhaps I missed my chance… I’ll have to keep looking
Congrats on the weightloss! You go girl :D

I lurve my wii fit. I have become a self obsessed exercise freak. It is only 8:05 here in the UK yet I have already done 20mins free step, 10mins running, 6 mins hula and 6 mins boxing!

This is worrying. But I’m learning to deal with it :)

I linked over from BloggersAnnex. I love your blog. I love this post. I love your humor and that you keep things real.

Hmmm — exercising to Wii sounds like a great idea I should try. Now if only my son lets me have a turn with the darned Wii.

by GrumpyAngel on August 27, 2008 at 7:26 am. #

hear, hear. i’ve been thinking along those lines a lot lately, too…how i aim to give my children what’s best for them over what they want…but i also need to be willing (and disciplined enough) to do the same for myself.

i heard an interesting tidbit about perfectionists a few years back, which seems true of me at least: when we feel the task is overwhelming and impossible to do perfectly (or at least a heckuva lot better than everyone else), we simply don’t try at all. this is why you can see a perfectionist with a trashed house, or a perfectionist flunking out of med school, etc. intriguing, no?

of course, we must push past this wall of “do it perfectly or not at all.” sometimes i feel like God’s pulling me over this hurdle (as i perform the proverbial kicking-and-screaming routine), but in the end i’m quite thankful He loves me enough to not leave me alone. :)

I love Wii Fit! It is really fun and so far, the only exercising I can do without being climbed on!

by Tirzah on August 27, 2008 at 2:41 pm. #

Way to go! Keep up the great lifestyle changes!

by Tracey on August 27, 2008 at 3:24 pm. #

Well done! I have recently realised just how unfit I am. I have been told by my doctor to do some exercise to help keep my emotions in check – but I almost had to look up the word exercise in the dictionary! However, I went swimming yesterday and actually enjoyed it! But my arms do really ache today.

Maybe I should get a machine that beeps at me when I’ve swum a length…

by razzler on August 27, 2008 at 3:27 pm. #

Hey, I think you’ve just convinced me to get a Wii . . . my eliptical is sooo boring.

by Heather B. Moore on August 27, 2008 at 4:57 pm. #

Whoohoo! Isn’t the Wii awesome!

Now, for even more “super icon” satisfaction, you must get Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party. I don’t like using the Wiimote with it so I turn it off. Lost a size in three weeks of dancing. You have to step on the touch-sensitive dance pad as the arrows move across the screen.

Highly addictive in a fantastic way! :D

Congrats on the 3 lbs!

I was just introduced to wii and wii fit a little over a week ago. My sister and aunt have it. I LOVED IT!!

I have the wii fit sitting in the other room, waiting for the wii to arrive in the mail (should be here by Friday).

I wonder if there’s a way I could send you my mii and you could send me yours and then we could do step aerobics “together”. ??

by Karlene on August 27, 2008 at 8:13 pm. #

Oh sweetie, I am soooo thrilled for your success. There is nothing better than being in the zone!!!

by Amber on August 27, 2008 at 9:03 pm. #

Good job you!

by That Chick Over There on August 28, 2008 at 12:02 am. #

Yeah for you. J. just won a Wii at a sales meeting last week so know I am all over him to get the Wii fit. You just made the case!

by Leendaluu on August 28, 2008 at 6:39 pm. #

I must have a wii.

by Dapoppins on August 28, 2008 at 6:52 pm. #

OKay now that is just awesome. Sadly my scale is doing the exact opposite of what yours is doing. Maybe I need a new scale . . .
