Ooooo…Shiny!
by Kym on September 8, 2008
The Ford Taurus X.
Isn’t it pretty? I think I shall call him Bob.
The one we originally looked at didn’t have anything extra special spiffy about it, and the more we hemmed and hawed the more nervous the car dealership became. The price went down, and they tracked us down a model that had a few bells and whistles. Namely leather seats (heated!), all wheel drive, satellite radio, and a built in DVD player. With gas prices being what they are, SUV’s are apparently a little tricky to sell, so we got a skookum deal.
You may envy me now. So long as deep, deep down you still love me to bits. (I’m trying to be a braggart without making you all hate me – how am I doing so far?)
Despite the spiffiness of the cushy leather seats, the DVD player with which to zombify my children, and the smooth ride of a (relatively) new vehicle, what had me grinning ear to ear as if I’d just discovered Nutella for the first time was the radio. Oh my. The radio. You see, we live in a remote area where we essentially get three radio stations. CBC, a country station, and a rock station that plays oldies and new music in no apparent order leaving you grimacing somewhat when you tune into it, never knowing whether what’s playing will delight or traumatize you.
So the satellite radio? So, so heavenly.
I was listening to it yesterday morning on the way to church, a lovely classical music station which had me wanting to dance as I drove (I’m weird like that). I was alternately beating my fingers against the steering wheel and rubbing my thumbs along the bumpiness of the stitching in the black leather. There was a very real tactile pleasure in this.
And I thought to myself…there’s a very real tacticle pleasure in this. (Again, yes, I’m weird like that) That sent me skittering off on a whole new tangent. I got thinking about tangibility. Which got me thinking about materialism. Which got me thinking about what a greedy and materialistic person I am. Which got me blushing as I drove down the highway, shooting covert glances at the other, less shiny, vehicles on the road.
I was certain their drivers must be darting angry and hate filled glares at the presumptuous woman gleefully driving her fab new red SUV around.
Which of course is ridiculous, because I’m nowhere near interesting enough to garner that sort of attention. Maybe if we’d gotten a “pink car with sparkles” as Emma requested…anyway, I ended up laughing at myself, out loud even, which I think worried the kids a bit because Emma asked, “You okay Mommy?” in a rather worried tone of voice.
I know you all think I’m joking when I go on about the “raving egomaniac” moniker I’ve dubbed myself with, but really, there’s some truth to that. It’s a relic of my shy days, I think. I live too much in the confines of my own head, and boy does that ever warp my sense of reality.
It makes for a good laugh every now and again though.

Yeah, congrats! I love how you call yourself a braggart for telling us about your awesome new ride. Hello!!As if we weren’t waiting to hear what you got and didn’t want to know the details about it! AWESOME about getting the terrific “bells and whistles!” and at such a deal.
Have you thanked your dear babysitter? :) BTW I thought you handled that terrifically!

Oops. That one from Ewelina is actually from me. I was signed into my daughter’s account, duh.

Yea for you!
(And I SOOOO have that kind of strange internal dialogue-slash-kooky landscape thing going on. I SO get it!)

I love that you got a new car! I love getting a new car!! I’ve only actually had ONE new car in my whole life, and it was an Elantra, but I felt like it was a Jag!
We’re getting a new SUV this next year, and dang if I’m not going to brag about it.
You go, girl, in that hot new ride. Envy, my dear, is just another form of flattery, so screw the naysayers (real or otherwise).
And YOU are not a braggart. I know a braggart when I hear a braggart and you are not a braggart. And I really like typing the word braggart, which is why I keep typing braggart, but you are most definitely NOT one of those. A braggart, I mean.
Alright, I’ll stop cluttering your comments with my prattle.
Enjoy the new car! (and red is such a cool color…)

ME TOO. What Nichole said.
Love it. You’re a hoot!

Hatch back! If only I could have convinced my wife to get the hatch back…

Being as I recently became carless, you can only imagine how insanely envious I really am!
Congrats on your new ride, it’s a beauty!
by Crystal on September 8, 2008 at 6:15 pm. #
You have every right to brag about a fancy new ride such as that! Heck, if it were me I’d be braggity brag bragging! It’s so pretty. I think Ella would concur with Emma about the pink with sparkles. She asked once if daddy could buy a princess bbq. “Not gonna happen, sweet!” was the response, I think.
Congratulations! It’s lovely.

Nice! :)

I think the satellite radio sounds like the best part too! Not that your ride isn’t spiffy, but I am always happy to have good music.
I’d be worried my boys would wreak havok on the leather seats though. Maybe the DVD player would lull them into submission though!

Love the new car and you are NOT a braggart…it’s a safe car for you and your kids and I SOOOOOO envy you the heated seats.
by Leendaluu on September 8, 2008 at 7:16 pm. #
My Miss Rumphius hearts your Bob ;)
I love it! Very spiffy, indeed!
I agree that despite the fact that a car DVD player zombifies the kiddies, it’s soooooooo nice. Even for short trips to the store which I swore I wouldn’t allow. But alas they are QUIET! Quiet, I tell you!
I am a teensy bit jealous of your satellite radio though because here in Texas there is NOTHING to listen to! Ugh.
by Shanna on September 8, 2008 at 7:52 pm. #
I’m so excited for you! And a little jealous. I’ve been craving an suv for a long time!
by JustRandi on September 8, 2008 at 8:11 pm. #
Hurrah! It looks fabulous! I would LOVE to have a built in DVD player… our two little ones that we use for trips just died… SIGH.

That is definitely shiny, I’m glad you got a great deal! :)

I’ve only had a satellite radio when we have rental cars on vacation but I agree it’s heavenly. Well, except the part about how those stations aren’t censored like good old FM is. The two eight year old boys got quite a giggle out of that discovery while I panicked and madly stabbed buttons in an effort to change the station. Whew!

My beautiful new shiny toy is named Hugo after the character in Fablehaven.
I love you to bits!

Yay for you! I’m so jealous of the DVD player. We got the 6-cd changer in ours instead… oh, and we have the Chevy version, but still. Heated seats! You will love them!!!
by Virtualsprite on September 9, 2008 at 2:30 am. #
Can someone just promise me that some day I’ll have heated leather seats??? Is that really so much to ask of this world?
Congrats on the car. Now you can see how materialistic I am:)
by Jen on September 9, 2008 at 3:39 am. #
Very spiffy indeed :o) I used to think that heated seats were just silly. That was until I got them and I was oh so wrong. Heaven.
by Tonya on September 9, 2008 at 4:20 am. #
Mmmm….I think I’m most jealous of your satellite radio! (But I LOVE the image of Melanie stabbing at the buttons trying to get rid of something that should have been censored. That is SO me!)
by charrette on September 9, 2008 at 4:25 am. #
p.s. And the leather seats? NOT a luxury! An absolute necessity! I think EVERY mom should have leather seats for the clean-up value alone!
Heated leather seats are fabulous. There’s nothing like a good bun-warmer on a snowy day!
by charrette on September 9, 2008 at 4:27 am. #
I can just picture your Sunday morning drive to church :) !!
Satellite radio … I can’t wait to indulge in that!
(I like the new look around here.)

You can join forces with Jamie and paint it pumpkin-orange. :-)

You could drive all the way to Austraia in that!
by david mcmahon on September 9, 2008 at 8:12 pm. #
…and now you have no excuse not to visit me! heheh.
ps looks more like a eugene to me, but since he comes with heated seats and satellite radio, i am currently too wrapped up in car envy to quibble over such things as names. yum.
by Nic on September 9, 2008 at 11:29 pm. #
Beautiful car! I don’t know if ‘Bob’ quite fits, though. It’s not green and I don’t see a leaf anywhere. ;)

As a former Taurus Station Wagon owner, I applaud you. True, mine was the previous body style (I acknowledge that the new style is slightly superior), but never has a woman loved a car more. Trading it in for a (slightly used) Sequoia was nothing short of heartbreaking. I miss her still, my little red ruby. Oh, sweet gas mileage…

Love the new wheels! I feel the same way about my Aura!

Came over to visit from David McMahon site.
Those heated leather seats must have been designed by a Canadian (woman.)
I couldn’t stand going through a Canuck winter without ours.
Bear((( )))

Nice Ride Kim! It is beautiful! And yeah I live too much in my own head too. A scary scary dwelling place.

so that’s what my old and busted ’93 Ford Taurus beater has been reincarnated into. Nifty. Now if I could ever talk my dear husband into buying something that doesn’t start with Toy and end with ota.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! New cars are awesome! :D

Beautiful! I’m afraid if I had XM radio, it would be hard to get out of the car! :)
