Filthy Lucre

Emma and Becca’s favourite toy of the moment is Neil’s coin jar. Whenever we’re not looking, they sneak up the stairs to our bedroom and a distant rush of clinking coins can be heard. They come downstairs with hands and pockets full of sudden wealth. Sometimes I confiscate, sometimes I turn a blind eye. Today was one of the latter sorts of days. I was caught up in novel rewrites and not paying the strictest attention.

Still, I took a break from writing long enough to grab Becca up into my arms and give her a solid snuggling. She giggled and wriggled and gave me a kiss or two as I told her how much I love her. Emma looked over at me with a cheesey smile and said, “Mommy, I love you sooooo much!”

I laughed, knowing this was her typical reaction to Becca having the audacity to monopolize mommy’s attention. I smiled warmly at her, reached out and stroked her cheek, and told her how much I love her too.

She then grinned. Hugely. And said, “And Mommy? I loooove Daddy’s money.” And then she laughed. Somewhat maniacally. Clinking a handful of coins from one hand to the other.

I worry about that girl.

Sidenote: Apologies if I haven’t popped round your blog recently. Bloglines is acting up and apparently has taken a disliking to you. If I have visited you, then you are one of the select few Bloglines has decided it’s okay for me to read. You’re feeling all warm and fuzzy now, aren’t you? Will attempt to make the rounds over the weekend. Mwah!

Getting her started at an early age, eh? Or maybe having so much exposure to money will have the opposite effect, like she won’t care about it when she gets older. Or maybe some sort of effect like The Secret where your kids will just always have a lot of money without too much effort because they just always thought they would?

Ah yes…Daddy’s money. All too soon they will be asking him for it so they can go shopping…

My children are also obsessed with coinage. Although recently, my four-year-old discovered credit cards. I now find them stuck in extremely weird places all over the house. (That’s not supposed to happen for another ten YEARS, riiiight?)

My son’s too young for the coinage… it gets taken away STAT… but I love the “I love you SO much” moments… Unfortunately, I’m being replaced by a little stuffed dog… but I’m hoping I’ll win out in the long run.

My 4 year old says the same things. She LOVES money. And especially a “dollar”. She’ll carry around her small cache of money and even sleep with it.

That’s what I love about kids–they don’t have the sense to edit themselves.

She is CUTE. I love it.

Logan had a “money” moment like that this week, too. He got a dollar in a card from Gramma and he couldn’t stop saying “MONEY!! I got dis MONEY.” I use plastic for everything; I didn’t even know he knew what money was. ;-)

We use to have permission to go through my dad’s dress pants and keep all the coins that resided in the pockets. It really did add up. Not just in amount, but in such great memories.

Why do kids love to play with money? My Grandma gives the kids change for their birthdays and I find it all over the house after they have counted it a jillion times.

My dad’s father used to drop coins all over their bedroom, before he got sick and passed away. It was always a favorite activity of me and one of my younger cousins to go on treasure hunts in their bedroom. (it was also a great way for them to get their room cleaned up)
