Irony Hurts My Brain

Sometimes I think in blog posts. This is a disturbing trend, and leaves me feeling a wee bit unsettled every time. As I was scrubbing the table the other day I was literally dictating a blog post inside my head.

And not just any blog post. A post that had the potential to change. The. World. Or at the very least make a few people giggle and maybe earn more comments than the norm. Yes, my most brilliant ideas tend to come at the most inconvenient of times and as a result they just fade away. My true genius has yet to see the light of day because I’m too scatterbrained to ever think to write the ideas down.

But the other day I had the idea that I ought to buck this trend and so I wrote on a scrap piece of paper:

Write down ideas
Carry a notebook at all times
Blog about this

This was about five days ago now. I’ve got a notepad and pen positioned on my desk, another set on top of the microwave, and a small notebook and three pens (in case of pen malfunction) in my purse.

And I haven’t had a single idea since.

I hate when life gets all ironical like that.

  1. That is hilarious. Try to organize your posts thoughts, and then nothing happens. You must be more spontaneous than you thought. Let us know if it works for you though.

  2. I write posts in my head as things are happening. My husband frequently says, “Are you blogging in your head again?” My problem is that most of my brilliant ideas come in the middle of the night, after one of my kids has asked for a drink of water or something. So I lay in bed, trying to decide whether to go back to sleep or get up and blog. If I don’t get up, I will NEVER get back to sleep.

I hope some more amazing posts come to your mind so you can put the notepads to good use!

  3. hahaha! All you have to do is lose the pens. Then the ideas will flow freely, I’m telling you!

  5. Randi’s right! Lose the pens, let the girls color on all the pages of your notebooks, or rip them out, which ever they prefer.
Does it make you feel better that I think in blog posts too??

  6. Ah, yes. The old “if only I had a pad and pen right now!” posts… BTDT. Many a brilliant thought has been lost to the recesses of my mind. And the ones that do survive? I rarely have ample time to flesh them out the way I desire… I think I need to post less but with better quality…

  7. Yeah, I hate it when that happens! Sometimes, even if I remember what it was I wanted to blog about, once I’m out of the moment I can’t remember why it seemed like such a great idea. So annoying.

  9. Heh… That happens to me all the time.

  10. That made me laugh because it happens all the time. I’m trying to get in the habit of writing things down as well. I’ve filled the backs of envelopes and random pieces of paper this way.

Here’s hoping all those lovely ideas come roaring back!

  11. Yeah, I have to agree that the pen trick is a sure-fire bet. I’m going to start doing that now. I’ll turn it into a game with my son where I’ll have him hide all the pens before school each morning and I’ll never lack for ideas again. Brilliant!

  12. Oh my, this was so funny! Too scattered to get unscattered on paper, I suppose? :)
This is exactly what would happen for me too. If I plan to be organized and think straight, I just stop coming up with great ideas.
    This post is hilarious!

  13. LOL I hear ya. I also have notebooks and pens positioned around my house: my desk, the kitchen and (of all places) the bathroom…because I think best while in the shower and brushing my teeth! LOL

It’s okay… see… it gave you something to post about anyways!

  16. ahahaha you are too funny! how about tying a pen around your neck and just scribbling the notes directly on your body… hand, leg, whatever! hehehe

  17. LOL! My best ideas come late at night as my mind is wandering just before sleep. Of course I’m too tired to do anything about it then.

  20. Beth

    Totally funny. Totally true.

My blog’s been suffering lately. I used to be so pleased with the stories I told — about the smoke alarm going off and the fire department being called, about the quarters flying everywhere as I dropped the rolls on the stairs, about the nickel getting stuck in our DVD drive and having to take it into the shop to discover this. You’d think that I’d be happy that these things are well in my past but I am strangely disappointed, wondering if I’m forever out of good blog material.

Hope I didn’t just jinx myself. Wait, I hope I did. Hmm. :-D

  21. This happens to me, too! Maybe if I’d quit storing all this useless information (like my kids’ SSNs and what we’re having for dinner for the next week) in my brain, I’d have enough room to remember blog ideas.

    Maybe.

  22. I can’t tell you how many ideas have slipped away from me because I haven’t written them down. Don’t worry and keep the paper handy. They’ll start coming again.

  23. I always think the same thing… I usually have my best ideas right as I am about to fall asleep…. Then POOF! & you get what i am left with…not a lot

  24. That’s kinda funny, because I came to the computer tonight (at 1am mind you) to try to refocus my brain because as I was getting ready to fall asleep, I started formulating a poem in my head and thought, “you know, if I don’t turn on the light and write this down, it’ll be gone by morning”. So, I turned on the light, fumbled to find a pen and notebook and started writing. The first 4 lines were good, just what I’d wanted to say. But the further I got into it, the more I struggled to fit the thoughts I was trying to convey into phrases that rhymed. Now, MOST of the time, when I sit down to write a poem, it just all flows into lines within minutes only to need minor tweaking to get it just right. Guess you can call it blessed talent. But, occasionally, like tonight, I just plain get stuck. Usually I finally give it up, likely to never finish what I’d started. But the purpose of tonight’s poem is really important to me. Maybe I’m taking the wrong angle, or maybe, I’m just WAY TOO TIRED TO THINK STRAIGHT. Either way, I may have been better off to just go to bed and try it in the morning. So, maybe it’s not always best to write it down while it’s fresh. Although, knowing my brain, if I’d just gone to bed, I’d probably go 2 or 3 days before even thinking about wanting to write the poem again, and by then the emotions wouldn’t be as fresh.

  25. I do this all the time – write posts in my head. I phrase thoughts, and such. About one in ten of these will somehow be put into a post, but usually the one I made in my head is better. Also, I then forget an essential part of the post that I had concocted, and then it haunts me after I already published the post. (Yeah, I could go back and edit the post…..but I don’t).

I’m not sure that notebooks would work for me, because my best posting comes all at once in epiphanies. Somehow having mentally written the post before doesn’t ruin this, but I’m sure if I started to write something down before at all the muse of creation would be satisfied with those mere notes and leave me bereft at the computer.

  26. Know what you mean. I never have good ideas when I have pen & paper ready. I have lots of them in the shower, but even if I get out and write them down, the ink bleeds, what with all the water dripping off me, and I can’t read my notes anyway.

  27. See, that’s why I don’t post very often…

  28. Of course the one day you leave your pen and notebook at home you’ll be struck with sheer brilliance! Irony is ruthless like that.

(Brillig and I think in blog post form as well…we’ve talked and laughed about it many a time. Good to know we’re in good company.)

  30. I have just read two of your posts; laughed about blogging in head (cuz I do too) and cried for your sadness. Thanks.

  31. so I’m just getting back through all of your posts I missed and I sweat you must be my long lost twin sister. I find myself thinking I find myself thinking in blog posts too and they are always genius but always crop up at the most inconvienient times like when I’m elbow deep in hamburger making meatloaf or something. I have solved this by using my iPhone notes feature. It not as intimidating as a pad of paper and work just as well. To bad my finger typing is pretty crappy.

jen´s last blog post..Today is one of the days I really love my job
