In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  2. Melanie J Said,

Not many people know this anniversary. What was it called? Armistice Day? Here we call it Veteran’s Day and honor all veterans of wars, which I think is a nice gesture. This poem reminds me of one I used to teach to my eighth graders, another WWI poem by Wilfred Owen called “Dolce et Decorum Est”. It’s far more grim but in an age where war games proliferate the video game experience, and I wanted them to understand that it’s not all a Dreamworks film production. It’s real and it’s hard. I think it serves us all well to take a moment to honor the memories of those who satisfied their sense of duty and love of country.

  6. Tracy Said,

This poem always moves me to tears (especially when my 6 year old read it to me last week from his book “A Poppy is to Remember).

We’re on the same page today - I just posted about Remembrance Day too. I’m glad we remember.

  7. LisAway Said,

    What a moving poem.

Today is Polish Independence day. After 123 years of being divided between three countries, and not existing on the map as Poland, they finally regained their independence. It’s a very important day. I love having a day for the remembrance of all veterans.

    About Me

    The Truth

I make no promises which cannot be kept through laziness and self-indulgence.

I'm a skinny person from the neck up. There's a reason you only ever see head shots of me. Yes, I suffer from floating head syndrome.

I don't know why I'm bothering to fill this section in since I'll probably change templates before anyone thinks to look down here anyway.
