I Used to Loathe Them

Even though doing so gave me the opportunity to work the word loathe into casual conversation which hey, let’s admit, is all round good fun.
I would wrinkle my nose with disgust as I flicked their messages into my trashcan, reflecting on what worthless, scummy excuses for human beings they must be to spend their time afflicting other people with filth and perversion the way Spammers do.
And then I had one of those lovely ah-ha/epiphany moments. Which totally wrecked everything. I mean, I’m all for growing and learning and being a better person and all that…in theory. In practice it really makes life more difficult, I find.
It’s easier to hate, you know? There’s no thought, effort, or understanding required. It comes naturally, in fact, and can be just a natural by-product of living in an increasingly unsettling world. It’s easier to hate than it is to care. Easier than seeing the other side, turning the other cheek, or asking the really tough question of, “How did they become that kind of person? What happened to them that lead them to make those kind of decisions?”
So I’m ruined. Wrecked. I can’t hate the Spammers anymore. I’m too busy pitying them. Reflecting on how miserable and lonely their lives must be if peddling smut is their surest path to pleasure. I know there are other possibilities. That they are greedy, evil, and sneering in the face of all that is good. But I also know that maybe, just maybe, they’ve forgotten how good it feels to be clean.
I can pity that. Which means I can’t hate.
Dang. And it was so much more fun.

It is sad. Very. Still, I can’t help but feel angry for all the people who want to avoid those things but are tempted, maybe just ONCE, to click over and then possibly begin a downward spiral that is near impossible to reverse.
But mostly I’m with on the pity and wondering what kind of life these poor people have had.

SO true. I’ve always had this annoying propensity to wonder HOW someone became so hateful…then I have trouble hating them because I know they must have been hurt, misguided, made to feel worthless. It really would be so much easier to shake my head and scoff. sigh.

I just don’t get it. Why do they do this? Why? I don’t know if I am yet to the mature point of not hating them.

If I didn’t know that most spam is computer generated which means someone out there decided they would write a program that would create all this drivel and hack websites for email addresses to overload with virus infested crap for mail I might be able to be more accepting. I wish I could wrap my mind around what process gets a person to the place where this sort of thing seems an okay thing to do. Unless that place is greed I just don’t see it.

I drive my husband crazy because I’m forever bringing up “the other side.” Like if someone cuts us off in traffic, I’ll mention that maybe there was a pregnant woman in the back seat. Or if someone says something tactless, I’ll wonder what went wrong for them that day.
It’s a blessing and a curse, isn’t it?

If I don’t know who sent it, I don’t open it. Sometimes I get emails from myself, those ones, I definitley don’t open. Sometimes, when I’m on a roll, I accidently delete emails from people I DO know. (sorry Kim) But that’s an easy fix! I don’t let it annoy me because really, I have so much more things to annoy me than that!

Sadly, learning not to hate and moving on to pity is part of growing up. But, it gets easier and not so sad and I can say that because compared to you I am ancient.

I don’t feel sorry for them. They won’t do it if it were not for filthy lucre. Many of them probably have perfect childhoods in the suburbs and just found an easy way to make money others be darned.

Having been a telemarketer, I feel about an ounce of sympathy for THEM. But spammers who write about enlarging male organs and such? NASTY. I don’t need or want what they’re selling and still!! STILL I have to be subjected to reading those things every time I open my spam mail…
