In Which I Embarrass Myself Mightily

by Kym on December 18, 2008

So the illustrious, hilarious, multi-faceted and multi-talented Mombabe has sponsored a Karoke Christmas Contest. And because I’ve lost hold of my already tenuous grip on sanity, I decided to enter.

Now, I go to great lengths to take flattering profile pictures. Much of my youth was spent being mocked for my poor skin, big nose, lanky hair. You name it, I’ve been mocked for it. So to display an actual video clip of myself is transcending the outer limits of my comfort zone in a BIG big way.

Still, what better time of year to post something like this than when everyone is too busy to read?

So yes, here I am, singing (badly) and trying to win the offered tutu’s for my darling girls. Ah, a mother’s love. Are there no limits to it?

By the way, if you watch this you are 100% obligated to comment. Nicely. I want to slot in an appropriate threat here but really, the only retribution I’m likely to indulge in is crying. A very great deal.

Oh, and vote for me. Or yes, much crying may ensue. Vote Here

All the other entrants are cuter than me. Of course, they’re all pre-pubescent….

Kim I think that was GREAT! Not only do you sound really good, but you did something I don’t think I’ll EVER ever do. That took a lot of guts.

And you look lovely and Emma is just sweet. :)

Merry Christmas!

What a beautiful singing voice you have! And I loved seeing you via video, so I could hear your voice and see a bit of your personality through talking rather than through written words.

GO KIM! How neat to see you on video! And not only do you look lovely, you have a lovely voice!

It was so adorable seeing the girls pop up while you were singing.

If we lived close to each other, I’d be wanting to sing duets with you all the time.

Beautiful performance, and what a wonderful surprise!

You DID NOT sing badly. And I love getting to see you! I feel like we’ve met now. Except when we met, you didn’t get to see me, I just got to see you, which would be weird. You have a lovely voice and I think you look great AND your girls are too cute sneaking around and peeking.

Kim! You’re singing and speaking voice is beautiful. It brought back memories of our teenage-hood. :) Gooooo tutu! Merry Christmas!

You’ll have to explain the “embarrass mightily” part, because you have a great voice. Really, you do.

I have bad news for you, Kimberly: I’m afraid that you’ve thrown your awkward, insecure, self-conscious persona out the window. I found you lovely, refined, eloquent, and talented. From now on, whenever you have one of those “why am I such a freak?” days, you’re just going to get a tsk, tsk from me…. and I’ll refer you back to this video. (Can I say that it almost brought tears to my eyes that your cute girls flitted about you and whispered reverently while you sang?) Ha, embarrassing indeed. You were grand.

No fair! I always tell people I don’t sing, but was given the talent of playing the piano – you got both! Awesome job…good luck on the ballerina outfits!

by Nicole on December 18, 2008 at 12:42 pm. #

Oh, my! You can sing too! Where does the talent end with you? You are one gutsy chick! I’m rushing right over to vote for you…those cute girls need tutus! Great job! (And you’re so lovely!)

I vote for you! You sounded great! And it was so great to hear your voice and see you move and such. Your voice is so soft! I don’t know, I guess I was picturing you being rowdy or something…don’t know why…but you totally busted my visions of what you sound like. :) I’m off to vote. Yay kim!

by elaine on December 18, 2008 at 1:36 pm. #

Um, do you sing in church much? You can’t hope to hide that talent in a congregation like that. I’m so glad you did this! I loved “meeting” you! Woo hoo!

P.S. I felt bad voting against the little ones…but I had boys *<|:’) Happy Holidays!

Wow you sing really well! I don’t know what you’re talking about singing ‘badly’, I was very impressed. I think you’re going to win. :)

Dude, you are a real person! I don’t know what it is about a video clip that makes it so, but it does. :-) You have a great singing voice and great speaking voice to boot. And you are plenty pretty. So stop being so self-conscious. ;-)

Your “bad” singing is really really really good. REALLY. I loved it. I loved cute Emma and Becca playing quietly on the floor, idyllically and angelically, and then Emma so-cutely interrupting but then enchanted by the song. Good luck with the tutu!

by Beth on December 18, 2008 at 3:25 pm. #

Holy cow Kim! I never knew you could sing like that! Awesome talent, unfortunately I would be a HORRIBLE mother if I didn’t vote for Piper… but you have an amazing talent… me, I can carry a tune about as well as I can ice skate.

by Abra on December 18, 2008 at 4:26 pm. #

My little guy was watching it with me and he said, “That lady has your voice.” I took that as a HUGE compliment!

I loved it! You have a beautiful voice. You look great and your girls are super-cute. What courage you have. Thanks so much for sharing it.

by RhymesWith on December 18, 2008 at 9:13 pm. #

eh. i’ve heard better….okay they were professional and on tv, so that doesn’t count.

that was totally awesome!

wait. your post says there’s something embarrassing there. i didn’t see that. where was it exactly? i only saw some LOVELY singing. then i went and voted. i don’t really want your girls to have a tutu, but i couldn’t stop myself from voting for you.

okay i do want your girls to have a tutu. but i wouldn’t have wanted it if you sucked. which you don’t. :) :) :)

my coworkers think i’m really amused by the code i’ve written, but the truth is that i’m smiling because you did all that without doing what *i’d* have done, which is, in the middle of it all, go “will you stop bugging me? momma’s trying to sing, for crying out loud!”
you didn’t do that, so you are my hero.

by NorahS on December 26, 2008 at 11:56 am. #

Kim! That was fabulous! You sounded GREAT…and how did you manage to stay on pitch unaccompanied? I loved hearing your speaking voice (I imagined it deeper, from your posts, for some reason) and there was something beautifully symbolic about, in the midst of the world’s chaos, a lovely young mother crooning Silent Night and her little ones gathering around her because they just can’t stay away.

I hope you win!

Kim.
that was holy.
your voice, the all of it.
I am honoured to know someone who has such grace . Who shares it.

and I was struck by how I wish I could go back and be a mother like that . when my children were small I so would have lost when “interrupted” . Not getting the point. Well, knowing it deep down, but not having the peace , the centred trust that you do.
wow. thank you so much for sharing this with me.
