Random Seven
by Kym on January 26, 2009
The lovely Rebecca has tagged me for a meme and while I usually ignore tags, I’m rather grateful this time. I’m wanting to shake off the broody mood of my last post and this seems a good way to go about it.
It’s a tricky proposition though, this coming up with seven random things about myself that you don’t already know. Depending on who the reader is, the task could be considered simple, or nigh on impossible. If I’ve any sort of reputation in the blogging community, it’s likely for being too open and honest. Yes, I am the Queen of Overshare. Long time readers already know about the hair that grows on my big toes. They’ve seen pictures of my home in various states of disarray. Heck, they’ve even seen a video clip of me singing.
Truly. I have no shame.
So you may or may not know these seven things I’m about to share. If they look boring feel free to skip to the end. Heaven knows I’m tempted to.
1) Films are a hugely intense experience for me. It takes appalling bad acting to break the spell they otherwise cast on me. Yes, I’m the girl whose heart painfully skips beats. Who winces and grimaces and gasps whilst digging her nails into her seat cushion. I experience genuine bursts of emotion in reaction to what I witness on the screen. Part of me, for a time, truly believes that what I’m witnessing is real. I don’t talk during films, but love to talk at length about them afterwards. I’ve even lost sleep mulling over the plot, characters, or cinematography of a particularly stirring film. I rarely go to the theatre, and I’ll often simplify and say it’s because it’s too expensive or somesuch other excuse. But really, it’s just that the experience is too overwhelming to be had on a frequent basis.
2) Many know that I am a picky eater. Not many know why. Though my parents at times suspected alien involvement I am sure, the truth was more prosaic than that. My sense of taste is strangely amplified. Recent research indicates a genetic component to this. I also have a very vivid memory. Combine the two, and I am incredibly hesitant to sample new foods. My sensitive gag reflex makes me especially fearful of trying new dishes in social situations, as it can be quite mortifying to have it unexpectedly triggered. As I get older my sense of taste has diminished somewhat and I can enjoy foods I didn’t used to be able to. Mmm…broccoli!
3) I can’t dance. I can sing, play piano at a decently mediocre level, and even played the flute once upon a time, but when it comes to dancing my musical ability does a runner. No sense of rhythm. No grace. I often dance while I clean house, but I think the overall effect is somewhat similar to the death throes of a beheaded chicken.
I mean no offense to the chickens.
4) I love to bake. I dream of being the sort of woman whose baking gets talked about in tones of hushed reverence and awe. And drooling. I totally want to inspire drooling. However, I hate cleaning up the mess afterwards so I rarely bake. My baking skills are not improving much.
5) I never wear a watch. It’s not that I don’t want to be bound to schedules or anything all lovely and symbolic like that. It’s more that I don’t like facing up to how much larger I am now. Back in my skinny days, we used to have links removed or holes added before I could wear a watch. It made me feel special in a way. Now I put on a watch and I just feel fat. Bleh.
6) I don’t wear sunglasses. Squinting is fun, you know. I think it’s because being the sedentary bookworm that I am, I mostly used to spend my free time indoors reading and whatnot. Not much call for sunglasses. Now that I’ve got kids I get out a fair bit more. Neil insisted I come pick out a pair from his clinic and I finally got around to it. After I found a pair I quite liked, I found out the price. $345 dollars. I about fainted. It’s covered by the business or some such nonsense but still! Confession? I have NO clue where they are right now. Eeep!
7) I tend to lose things. Neil is somewhat (ha) averse to throwing things away, and in my attempts to sort through the clutter things tend to get…misplaced. Including the cheque for $250 his aunt sent us for Christmas. And my passport. And the hydro bill that’s due in three days. And all the short stories I wrote while I was at college (of course, it’s quite possible those are better off lost…)
So to sum up…I’m a mess. But I’m a happier mess than I used to be so I think I’ll call it good.

This is a really fun list. My hubby’s got the bionic taste buds too. Lots of fun being the one to COOK for them, let me tell you. :D

“I mean no offense to the chickens. ”
Hahahahaha. You are adorable! Thanks for indulging me! I really enjoyed learning more about you!
I too, lose things. ALL. THE. TIME. It drives me and everyone around me nuts!
I also love to bake, but I don’t because I love to eat. I don’t love being fat. Well…although Dr. Phil would say I do, because I am. What does he know anyway?
I don’t have a bionic sense of taste, just smell.
And I refuse to watch “deep” movies anymore. I have so much emotion in my life that I can’t take movie-induced ones. I actually get upset that they can make me feel like that. The only movies I will watch are ones that are so far out there (like natural disasters destroying the world) that I can detach myself from them. Romantic comedies and plain comedies are what I go for, although my taste leans towards British comedy so a lot of American “comedies” don’t do it for me. I avoid the sad and “poignant” films like the plague. Oh, and the ones where a child is hurt/missing/kidnapped/dying. I can’t even watch previews for those.

Oh, and thanks for calling me “lovely”. How did you know that is one of my favorite words of all time!
Happy day!
“I feel lovely, oh so lovely….” I can marginally sing as well. You should get on that karaoke singing site so we can do duets. Although James needs to hook that computer back up first….

Ok, last comment. I said “I can marginally sing as well.” It should have read, “You have a great voice. I can sing marginally.” I hope the first one didn’t come across badly….
Open mouth, insert foot. I’m leaving! :D

I have a hard time believing movies are real, but I enjoy the stories while I pick them to shreds. I love to cook, I don’t like to wear a watch, I can’t dance worth a lick, I’m a picky eater in regard to texture–that’s one reason I can’t do chicken. I fear every bite will encounter gristle. But I LOVE sunglasses. I bought an expensive pair once and lost them–made me sick, so now I stick with the wal-mart $6 ones. I buy two or three at a time. I recently learned that cheap sunglasses can actually cause eye damage–will you ask Neil about that? The article said that because they block enough rays that allow you to keep your eyes open, you’re then at hightened risk from the rays they don’t block. I did not like hearing that one bit, I don’t even wear glasses . . . yet.

I don’t wear a watch either. But I’m allergic to metal, and the metal on watches always gives me awfully itchy hives.
I hate to bake BECAUSE I hate the clean up afterward.
Loved your list!

Ah… I too am a terrible dancer. It doesn’t stop me from trying, but I am a fish out of water in that area… and I too am otherwise musically inclined :)

I am just like that at movies! I get way too involved, but it’s still fun. My husband thinks it’s strange that I get crushes on characters in movies – not actors – but characters. I’m like that with books too.

So, one of my blog favorites highly recommended your site as a “must read” – she wasn’t kidding!
And imagine my good fortune to find you on a day when your spilling it all with a meme. Good timing by me!
“I mean no offense to the chickens” – pure gold!
Thanks for sharing.

I’m also a fairly picky eater though I have branched out since my husband has been cooking. It seems he can make most things taste good.
I also don’t wear a watch, just because I don’t want something on my wrist all the time and they’re usually either too gaudy or too bulky.
I also experience the emotion of movies rather intensely.

these are marvelous. i, too, experience films with an unhealthy level of intensity (books too). we would be great together at a movie–gripping on to each other and whatnot–and then breaking it down, scene by scene, in some bustling cafe afterward.
and i loved the bit about the chickens…you bring joy to my day.

$345 for sunglasses! I think I’m being fancy when I fork over $7-10 rather than the usual $5 I’m willing to spend….of course I’ve been told I’m a cheapskate. ;) Very good post, it’s always fun to learn new things about other people.

I love this. :D
I love when a movie affects me like when you describe. To be totally immersed is a fantastic feeling (as long as it’s not too scary, lol)
I’m not a dancer either and I’m frequently told by the husband that I might be tone deaf, lol.
Watches, blech! Who needs em. :D
Okay, as I’m reading all these I realize we might be twins, lol.

I used to be like that with films, but since having kids I’ve become so ADD I can barely watch them in ten minute increments. I have to watch one 20 times before I can actually see the whole thing.

Hi lovely. I’m all caught up (as usual). Yay for the calmer attitude to guests. I hope they’re nice. And well done on all the tidying. I can’t believe Miss Becca is going to be three. Blimey! BUt then I can’t believe M is 4. It goes too fast sighhhh. Hugs to you and please don’t give up hope. Your little one will come when he/she is meant to. But I understand too as I longed for Miss M. Love you. xoxoxo

I did learn a few new things about you :) I very rarely don’t like a movie. I don’t take peoples’ criticisms about a movie too seriously…I’d rather find out for myself. And I don’t wear a watch either because I can’t stand the feeling of something on my wrist. I don’t wear bracelets and very rarely do I wear long sleeve shirts…and when I do I usually have the sleeves pushed up. :)

I wish I loved baking. And I used to love shirts that came just to my waste, but like your disdain for watches, I no longer wear thse shirts, I wear tunics. They cover more.

Hi you! I lose everything too, my immigration papers (gasp! did I just say that out loud?) my cheque from the gov’t, my keys weekly, my phone daily, you name it, I lose it!
PS you were a VERY good flute player might I add. And dancing is highly overrated, I can’t dance very well either :)
by Abra on January 28, 2009 at 12:13 am. #
These were interesting to read! I love watching movies so much that I would have a hard time with your sensitivity. (I mean if I had it, of course!) Can’t handle action movies where the screen is constantly flashing etc. though.
And broccoli is our favorite veggie. Hooray for dull taste buds!

i spoke to the chickens, they are not offended. they said they tend to run around like a kymburlee sometimes anyway.
i wish i didn’t wear a watch. wait. i can just not wear one. i am officially a non-watch-wearing girl. i am probably going to regret that in the morning – no, i’ll have my phone on me. it’s all good! cooooooool. oh feel that. it’s so nice, so freeing. i love my new watch-less arm. so pretty.
i read your 400 things. and i learned new things here. so that means, incredibly, that there are *more* than 400 things about you. there are only 144.3 things about me. i’m so jealous.
g’night now.

6. I wear prescription sunglasses for driving. They cost what you said they cost.
And I have lost mine, oh, roughly once a year. And sometimes I find the previous lost pair when I lose the current pair. Those are tender mercies, to be sure.
7. Ditto
Not just saying all those dittos, dear one. We have an eery amount in common.
Hope you’re recovering from the negative. :)

I feel lost without my watch. Yes, I must always wear my watch, but only when I am out and about. At home? No watch, no ring … and I love to wear my sweats :) !!
And you can sing well :) !!
Sunglasses are a must in my life. My pupils are too dilated so if I don’t wear them I get even more headaches than I already do. Ick.
Glad that you and I can be a happy mess together :) !!
