If Music Be the Food of Love…and Hamsters…

We bought a hamster today. I spent part of my day installing her in our old fish tank and attempting to persuade Emma and Becca not to completely traumatize the poor thing. I know that hamsters are just rats with better P.R., but still, I’m already quite smitten with her. Name has yet to be determined, but so far the girls have suggested Henry, Hamster, Aya, and Stinky Poo.

Negotiations still pending.

She nearly escaped on the way home. We were only 30 seconds out of the pet store parking lot when I realized she’d chewed a big enough hole in her cardboard box to poke her head out of. I hastily opened the food bag and dropped some in, but she didn’t notice and only began gnawing at the box more fiercely. As a last ditch resort I turned on the radio. Suddenly…all was quiet. Apparently our new hamster is a fan of Diana Krall.

Once home, I cuddled my girls, built block towers, read stories, played hide-and-go-seek, chatted with my best friend, answered a few emails, cleaned my kitchen, cuddled some more, proof-read a little, wrote some more, played online scrabble, did a whole whack of laundry, thought about doing more housework and decided that nah, I’d rather write, and wrote.

I wrote 3500 words today. I even liked some of them.

I won’t go so far as to call it a well balanced day, but I’m smiling at the end of it and that’s good enough for now.

  4. 3500 words? That’s amazing!

We had a guinea pig and my son named her Snow White Superman Curious Cotton Candy. So maybe Stinky Poo is not so bad.

  8. Sounds well-balanced to me! You did a little of everything, and fit in the most important things. Nice job! We had a hamster one–Buddy. He lasted a good while. Died with crumbs on his face, and I think, a smile.

  10. Stinky-poo, definitely, for that hamster.
Although, since he has such great taste, maybe Jazzy would be a good name! (I love Diana Krall)

And it sounds like you, my dear, have had an excellent day. Cause for celebration.

Watch that thing like a hawk – they are escape experts! I had two as a kid, neither of which were around for very long. They are a lot of fun while they last though, but boy are the sneaky! I like the name Henry. :)

  19. What a great day you had! I actually rather like hamsters..and have been thinking about getting one for the girls but then reflected on how traumatized they would be if one of our three cats ate it…. I’d lose my mother of the year award. Sigh
