Warm Fuzzies

Moving on from yesterday’s lead balloon of a post…
Our hamster Ellie who was lost over a week ago is sleeping safe and snug in her cage this morning. Yes, Valentine’s Day started with much rejoicing in the VanderHorst household. Emma roused her groggy parents with assertions that the hamster had escaped and was hiding in a present. Certain she’d been dreaming I rolled over and tried in vain to fall back asleep. A slightly more energetic Neil rolled out of bed and followed the aggravated Emma.
A few minutes later I was awoken to the sight of our hamster clawing about in a mason jar being held under my nose. She’d gotten herself stuck in a paper bag in our recylcing bin and Emma had heard her scratching. It pays to recycle!
Though blurry eyed, I managed to summon the appropriate level of mingled relief and joy that I see shining like a beacon in Neil’s face. He asked me if I’d arranged it and I smiled serenely and said that yes, I’d been praying.
He laughed.
It’s a Happy Valentine’s Day indeed. It was going to be anyway because I’m done office work for the time being. I’ve never been happier at the prospect of a day spent cleaning the house. I even accused Neil of purposely having me in to his clinic so I’d appreciate my home life more.
He just grinned.
Life is good. Chaotic. But good.

That’s one lucky little rodent. When I was little, my escapee found the mousetrap under my mom’s oven. Just one more pet-induced trauma added to a long list of my childhood. :)
