Temporary? Insanity

The Egomaniacal Ramblings of a Mildly Deranged Housewife.

Posted by Kym On June - 8 - 2009

Instead of sitting here and contemplating the weekend just passed with a nice warm glow of contentment, I’m feeling a bit sour. How can the week compare?

How can boring blah weekdays compare to hours of fun with family and friends? Watching the kids play with their new friends, splashing in the kiddie pool and screaming with shock and delight whenever Neil turns the hose on them? Laughing hysterically while the kids put on plays for us and force us to participate. Eating fresh banana bread and fruit while sitting outside in the lazy haze of a summer afternoon.

And then a Sunday afternoon spent playing games as a family. Pancakes made sticky with syrup for dinner and fresh watermelon for desert. Tickling and laughter. Cuddles and hugs.

It was too idyllic. Normal life just can’t compete. And I should be grateful. Grateful for those moments of peace and contentment, chased down by the sort of laughter that leaves a lingering belly ache behind it. Instead I’m missing my husband. Missing my friends. And looking at the expectant faces of my young children who have no idea just what a boring day is in store for them.

Sigh.

All right. Moment of self-pity over. Time for the presto-chango transformation into Super Mom, yes? I think, today, we will paint.

And so I’m going to wave my magic wand and shout presto-chango so loud you can hear it all the way to Canada and you will suddenly be filled with the energy you need to make it a good day. . .Maybe not idyllic. . .but good. And remember that some days good is enough.

It sounds like you have a case of the Mondays, one of my favorite lines from Office Space. The letdown is hard, but it’s just the rhythm of life and I remind my kids that’s what makes those days so sweet. ox

Days like that always seem to creep up on me. No amount of plotting or planning can recreate that kind of day. I wonder if I woke up each day looking for those amazing moments if I would find them more often?

Painting is an EXCELLENT idea! Can I come?

And remember that he weekends wouldn’t be nearly so magical if they weren’t the perfect punctuation for long drawn-out sentences of everyday drudgery.

I just throw the kiddos in the car and drive aimlessly. Yes, very exciting…

    you’re right – normal life can’t compete.

here’s the joy of older-ish kids: I can say “hey, people, remember that so-fantastic moment we shared yesterday (or last week, or last year) and wasn’t it beautiful?” and they say YES.

Welcome to monday. I have this experience all the time, especially in the summer when weekends are beautiful, friends come and visit and the food and beverages flow. But next weekend is JUST around the corner….you’ll make it.
