Happy Birthday to Me!
by Kym on August 19, 2009
I am going to spend the entirety of my day doing whatever I darn well feel like. The end result could be very interesting indeed…or perhaps, rather dull, since my list of things I really want to do includes things like bubble baths and favourite books and copious amounts of baked goods. My long cherished desire of jumping out of a plane some day is being postponed at the request of my husband who says I’m welcome to do so…AFTER the kids have been raised. He’s so sweet.
As for the ole blog, I’ve decided on a whim to share little known Kim-Factoids with you in celebration of my special day. Of course, this may prove tricky because of the whole open’n'honest thing I’ve got going on here. Is there anything I haven’t told you yet? Specifically, is there anything INTERESTING I haven’t told you yet?
1. I eat my food naked. Oooo…that sounds so naughty, doesn’t it? But I’m talking condiments here, people. Dry hotdogs. Dry hamburgers. Dry sandwiches. No sour cream on my potatoes. I am very much a detester of condiments. When I eat a food I want to taste the food. Label me a freak if you must.
2. Oh my. I just thought of something I am NOT going to share. Seriously. You do not want to know. A word of warning though? If you’re coming to visit me, PHONE first. You’re welcome.
3. I love nature too much to have it inside my house. My thumb? Is the black thumb of death. While I’d love to have a house covered in greenery and all things flowery and lovely, the guilt would simply eat me alive. It bothers me that something that makes me happy is something I seem destined to destroy. There’s a twisted sort of irony there.
4. I never plan my blog posts in advance. I get a little writerly sort of itch…and then I feel the blogging mood descend. I sit, I ponder a moment, and then I write whatever pops into my head. This, I am sure, explains a lot.
5. The smell of coffee makes me gag.
6. I suffer from self-inflicted personality disorder. I’ve given different aspects of myself different forms of the name Kimberly as labels (Kim, Kimmy, Kimberly…). This makes for some interesting bouts of introspection, let me tell you. And yes, I have considered seeking professional help…
7. When I was eighteen my boss and my pen pal both gave me the same nick-name within about two days of each other. Total twilight zone-ish moment. The name? Kimbo. At first, I loved it. It put me in mind of Rambo. And then, a horrific realization. Kimbo…Bimbo…by then though, the name had stuck.
8. Catch me from the right (wrong?) angle and I have two chins. Hence why I take my own online headshots, holding the camera WAY up high. Being on the tall side, there are far too many double-chinned photos of me floating around…
9. Much like the plants issue, I love animals too much to have a pet. Your average dog or cat deserves better than me.
10. I am the queen of writing birthday cards. I write long, heartfelt messages in them. The sort that will make a person blush or perhaps even tear up a bit. Shame that I never remember to mail them…
11. I often buy books I’ve never read, read them, think of someone I know, and then want to give the book to that person. But I don’t. Because I’m selfish like that and a small part of my sense of self-worth is tied up with how many books I own. Sometimes? I think I’m utterly ridiculous.
12. During in person interactions I tend to over share to a huge degree. You’re shocked, aren’t you? So yeah, making friends in person is a real struggle for me. Most conversations I have involve the semi-sane voice in the back of my mind hissing at me to just shut up already.
13. Sometimes, when unexpected company is on its way over, I hide dirty dishes in the oven. Recently, I turned the oven on and filled the whole house with the smell of my favourite tupperware container melting into oblivion. Sigh.
14. I’ve slowly been replacing my bathroom toiletry items with natural/organic products. Most are made with fruit extracts. Honeydew shampoo. Mango conditioner. Pomegranate body wash. Yup, I wander the world smelling like a fruit salad.
15. I have some serious inner ear issues and sometimes I just randomly fall over. This has often proven embarrassing.
16. I save every sweet note and thank you card I receive and keep them in a little photo album. I try to remember to flip through this when I’m feeling low/worthless.
17. Biggest pet peeve ever? People who jay walk SLOWLY. If you’re going to break the law and risk your life? Be quick about it already!
18. I’ve stopped wearing make up. It’s been about a week now. Years of acne induced trauma need to be gotten over for me to be comfortable with this but my skin is VERY happy right now.
19. I prefer (cold) water to just about every other drink out there. I quit drinking soda several years ago and now when I have it I get a very upset tummy. If a rootbeer float is on offer I have a hard time resisting though…
20. Recently I went to have my haircut (not with my regular gal – so, so foolish). The moment I sat in the chair the hairdresser ran her fingers through my hair and proclaimed, “I know just what you need!” and began cutting. And gave me the exact hair cut I did NOT want. I? Was too passive to protest. I’m really weak willed like that.
21. I thought about writing 31 of these, since that’s the age I’m hitting this year, but I’m tired of sitting here and I’m thinking that a bubble bath sounds pretty good right about now. 31…21…good enough. Oh, and I’m lazy, but I think you already knew that.
Have a happy day – I know I’m going to!
And Happy Birthday to my sweet, birthday sharing friend Kate. Love you, hun!

I just got home from a long day away teaching watercolor, but I was thinking about you in the car, for whatever that’s worth. Now I drop in here and find your post to be the perfect ending to a nearly perfect day. I’m so glad everyone is showering you with comments!

Okay, so for a second I was jealous of all your friends, sending you bloggy love, then I looked at the names and realized that several people are, you know, stopping by repeatedly. As they should. So much fun. I hope your day was brilliant and relaxing and prefect.
