Eowyn is the name by which she is known online, but she is known by so many other names to me. Friend. Confidante. Ally. Accomplice. Advocate. Companion. Sister. Best friend. Her very existence is a gift to me. Before her, I never knew what it was to experience friendship without fear. There is no judgment between us. No head shaking and tsk-tsking under the breath. There is laughter, and long serious talks that spiral into the depths of us. During tough times there is nothing but worry and love. There are never recriminations. No comments of “Well why didn’t you…?” or “You should’ve done such-and-such.” It hasn’t been a conscious decision, and there’s the true amazement of it all. It is simply what is natural and easy between us. No need to deliberate and choose how to be with each other – we just are.


Truly, my world was made new the day we met. An instant friendship which has spoiled me in many ways for all others. Other friendships are work. Striving and struggling to know and be known. To say the right thing always. To hold back what they might not be ready for – to only be the parts of myself that feel safe.


I hope she knows. On this special day when those who love her celebrate her birth. I hope she can know that there is no gift I can give her that can compare to what she has given me.
