Dear Becca,

21858_250894566927_668221927_4736313_652453_nYou are four today. Four years and I still haven’t got you figured out. At all. You’re way too young to be so engimatic.

On the one hand, you have a cherubic look about you with your pink tinged cheeks, shiny blonde hair, and big blue eyes. You have those rosebud lips and a certain grace to you as you flit about from place to place. Even when you’re walking you look as if you’re dancing, and when you dance ballet style I am absolutely enchanted.

Looks can be deceiving though. Oh my yes.

You have a will of iron, a defiant streak as wide as my hips, and an earwax melting shriek that makes me wish I could be a good mum AND wear ear plugs all day long (use your words, girl!). You are nearly immune to bribery, the pickiest eater I’ve ever met (and I’ve met ME), and you refuse to use the toilet for no specific reason other than that you don’t want to. Child, you are four now. This is getting embarassing.

And you’re brilliant. You’ve been able to name every letter of the alphabet on sight since just after you turned two (wish I could accept credit for that but it was those darn fridge magnets). If I weren’t so lazy I’m sure you’d know how to read by now, and you’re already starting to spell out words. I’m a little ashamed that you seem to have learned as much from the fridge as you have from me.

But then again, you show me that I’m getting some things right. You love your sisters. Emma is your best friend and nothing delights you more than getting a smile out of Claira. You have such a generous heart and share your toys and your treats even to your own detriment. It doesn’t worry you that giving Emma your cookie means you won’t have one. You just give. I am amazed by this.

You are fiercely independent and you stomp your feet and growl when you can’t do something for yourself. But you literally bounce up and down when you’re excited, grinning and clasping your hands together as you prance about. Your exuberance is contagious. You are a delight and a joy.

Alas, much as I love you my dear sweet fiercely independent girl, I am SO taking your diapers away.

Tomorrow.

Enjoy today.

Much love,
Your Mummy

  9. She is cherubic!

I think that fourth year is so nostalgic because the real countdown is beginning for school and other “bigger kid” activities.

I’ll bet she loves the baby!

  10. Happy birthday, Becca! (You have a terrific name, by the way!)

And Kim? Don’t you dare beat yourself up about not teaching her letters and whatnot sooner. Since she sounds like the independent type, you trying to teach her may have resulted in her not being as willing to learn to read. I waited until my kids had an interest in reading before giving them more, and the boys taught themselves, pretty much. I just read them good books. Lion used to like to fight me on so much that I waited until he showed an interest in reading. I found him sobbing on his bed one afternoon because he couldn’t read. That was while we were reading “The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe” every night as a family when he was five. He learned in a matter of days.

Poor Princess. I haven’t read to her nearly enough. That’s getting remedied, however.

  11. “Looks can be deceiving though. Oh my yes.”

    and…

    “earwax melting shriek”

Becca most definitely must be a twin (however possibly estranged) with one of my twins, Mae. She is a match on both counts. :)

    Happy bday, sweet girl.

  15. oh sweet little feist:) you and Willow seem to share the some spirit…twinkling eyes, dancing toes, firey will, quick as a whip.

oh Kim ,what are we to do??

I must say I am stunned that she is 4! 4!! (and we aren’t there to celebrate…ack!) wasn’t it just yesterday that I was pregnant with Noah and we were at the community garden and I held your sweet carrot topped baby for the first time?? back when our acquaintance was new, before I became, so happily, one of your friends.

Happy birthday Becca….enjoy the last day of diapers girl…potties are liberating, just you wait!

  16. What a sweet and tender letter you wrote Becca. She will cherish this some day … probably when she has her own 4 year old to deal with :) !! (The age of 4 has always been a tough one for me.)

I hope her birthday went well!
