Reinvention

by Kym on May 29, 2010

Did you know that when you do a Google image search for Reinvention most of the pictures are of Madonna? After a weekend at home alone with three young children (one who keeps waking up two hours earlier than usual, one who keeps yelling Mommy! Come wipe my bum! and one who shrieks like someone is stabbing her with a stick every time I leave her line of vision) the last thing I am in the mood to see is someone looking 1) thin (the number of pumpkin chocolate chip muffins I have recently devoured is VERY disturbing) 2) well dressed (I think the shirt I am currently wearing has been spat up on at least twice – and the shoulders have been gummed to the fabric equivalent of death) and 3) smiling a mysterious smile (the only mystery in my life being, What Is That Odd Smell in the Bathroom?).

I think I may have just qualified for entry in The Longest Sentence Used in a Blog Post Awards. Now tell me, was that last paragraph funny in a hilarity inducing way, funny of the trying too hard variety, or just sort of whiny and snarky? You see, I want to figure out what sort of blogger I am and so far I’m thinking Comic Genius might need to be crossed off the list of potentials. Hallo. My name is Kim and I am suffering a blog identity crisis.

I got to thinking about some of my favourite bloggers and what it is about their writing that captivates me. I think of Nicole and the sweetness of her words and the beauty of her photos. That wry sense of humour. The way she adores her children. The fact that I can hardly imagine how big her heart must be to encompass everything she demonstrates her love for. I think of Becca who is warm and funny and so genuine it’s a wonder readers can’t reach through the screen and poke her. That Girl with her delicious sense of humour and who without even meaning to I am sure, inspires me to want to be as thoughtful and service oriented as she is. And I don’t think there are words to describe the way the wordsmith Terresa Wellborn stirs my soul with her poetry and prose.

They and so many of YOU share something. There is something in all of you that makes me yearn to read your words. And today, after four years, I finally put my finger on it. You don’t write ABOUT yourself, your write FROM yourself. Does that make sense? And after four years of writing about myself I want to be done. I want to reinvent this blog. I want to change that tagline of mine from The Egomaniacal Ramblings of a Mildly Deranged Housewife to something…more. Something reflective of where I’m going next. I’m not sure what yet. Not sure where yet. Reinvention is usually more of a process than an event.

Hopefully the end result of this crisis will result in something worth reading. If not, I have a blog roll full of people who are.

(Tagline suggestions welcomed. If I select yours then you will win the highly coveted honour of me assembling a prize package to mail you that I will then forget to post.)

personally, i think it was funny in the “i can relate to that!” kind of way . . .
but then again, you may not want my opinion seeing as how my blog is now non-existent, and was never well read even when i DID have one :)
love you though! *HUGS*

I think I just figured myself out this weekend. My sister’s blog is all about finding the joy, and mine? It’s about finding the deeper meaning in everyday. It’s about having an outlet, a reason to organize the jumble of thoughts that crowd my mommying space and somehow, once expressed, free me to concentrate on living.

Usually. And then sometimes it’s just about cathartically spewing forth crap. (Of course, those are the posts that garner the most feedback.)

The prospect of change and coincidental timing with the onset of spring/summer (whatever). To which new direction are you taking this? I find it very exciting.

Aww, too bad. From one Desperate Housewife to another, I like your mad ramblings :-)

I loved the longest sentence ever. It made me nod my head and laugh because you captured that time I remember when my kids were little (and recently experienced when I babysat). And, your blog posts, no matter the content, give me such a great taste of your voice, your world, and your fight. Blogs are funny things. I’m still figuring it out, too. Cheers!

I just spoke on a panel yesterday about finding your blogger voice. I think you can make your blog whatever you want it to be, as long as it’s true to you. And we told the audience you don’t have to share everything in order to remain true to yourself.

Your longest sentence ever was most definitely funny stuff, in a made-me-smile kind of way. Well, Kate said it well — it was also an I-can-relate-to-that kind of way.

My blog has become more for my family (my immediate family, not extended) than for my readers. I’m the cliche mommy-blogger that keeps her blog as her journal. But I’ve decided I’m okay with that. I think that’s the key — blogging in a way that YOU enjoy, and not for an audience. (Unless you enjoy blogging for an audience, I suppose. Hmmmmmmm.) :-D

We talked a lot about voice at the CBC this weekend. I think you have distinctive voice, that doesn’t come across as being ego-centric, but thoughtful.

Funny, but I feel like the only real attention my family gets in my blog is very indirect. I find that I enjoy little personal essays or ponderings (go figger) about my life, and wonder sometimes if I am personal enough.

Reinvent if you want. It is your own little space, and you should make it be whatever you want. :)

I love your blog the way it is, but completely understand the need for stretching bloggy wings, making a change.

I was thinking a few weeks back of ditching my “Chocolate Chip Waffle” theme completely, and going for something that resonates more with writers. Still, erm, waffling on that one.

Do what you need to do, change what you feel necessary & know we (your friends & readers) will always be here, Kim.

PS: Thanks for the shout out!! :)

I think I know what you mean. I enjoy your blog. You often reflect on yourself and your feelings, past and present. I don’t see anything wrong with that, though, because it may help you out and those of us reading can relate and apply your reflections to ourselves, besides getting to know you better. But I know you are a real writer and whatever you write will come from the heart, so I will read you, whatever you decide to write about!

I really like your blog! It captivates motherhood, authorhood (a fake word, I know), and everything else…hood so well! However, if you feel the need to reinvent, you do so. I will continue to read because I enjoy your writing style. I also feel that we have made a connection that will continue no matter how much your blogging style changes.

Oh my. How embarrassing. I mean “captures” not “captivates.”

I happen to love your blog Kim…but then, you knew that. :) I love the idea of writing from yourself, what a beautiful concept. Your words make me want to reinvent my own blog…or at least start writing in it again.

I have several taglines teasing at the corners of my mind, inspired by your words. I will try to coax them out so that I can share them with you.

Going strong on 4 years and yours is still one of my favorites :) !!

I say reinvent if you want, but don’t be afraid if it takes several months to settle on the new tagline :) !!

I just had a tagline, but it’s gone.

Love you to pieces.
