Sunday Soliloquy: A Light in the Dark
by Kym on July 11, 2010
“Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.” – Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man
The first time I read those words I thought, wow, that’s rather depressing, the darkness always being there first. It’s a cold, bleak, discouraging sort of thought. Shiver inducing and unsettling.
But recently I read Reaper Man again and the words meant something entirely different to me. This time, I read joy into the words and their previous coldness melted in a wave of smiling warmth. I thought about the dark, and how it is the absence of light. And I decided there was something lovely about that. That the dark is always there waiting, waiting to be dispelled. Because that’s what light does. That’s what light is.
I think that’s a big part of what life is about and what we’re here on this earth to do. To be a light. To choose that. And I think we need the dark, because it’s the backdrop against which the light shines forth so wondrously.
“Then Jesus spoke to them again saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’” John 8:12

I LOVE this! I hereby need to add that to my reading list.

Annette, all Prachett should be added to your reading list. And if you want a really cool experience, read Reaper Man and then go read The Book Thief. :)
I’m going to have to ponder this myself.
You’re rather fabulous, you know.

Beautiful point! It gives me so much to think about, and the nudge to read more Pratchett!

Love it.
And I love that the photo has water as the flame on the candle.
And I love it that I have the note you sent me hanging right next to my computer, and that I can read it every day. It’s light. :)

Perfect. As your thoughts generally are. I am enjoying looking at a paper-and-envelope letter, sitting here in my kitchen, to remind me that you are lovely.

Light. Light is beautiful. I look forward to it every morning. OK. Maybe not EVERY morning.

Is it blasphemous if I admit I have never read Prachett? I think I need to change that :) !!
Wonderful quote and an even more brilliant interpretation!

Hmmm, I had never thought about that before. The darkness is waiting to be dispelled. Very nice!

Amen, sister! I love this post.
Take that, Darkness! (I turned it into a proper noun because it should be.)
