Intentional Happiness – Out of the Comfort Zone Edition

by Kym on July 15, 2010

If I didn’t have kids, I’d probably be a hermit. In fact, I vaguely recall (through a haze of sleep deprivation induced delirium) that I WAS a bit of a hermit once upon a time ago. Call it laziness, call it anxiety or mild agoraphobia, but going out really isn’t my thing. Oh, I enjoy it once I’m out and about, but I’m highly skilled at talking myself out of leaving my cushy comfort zone. So this week, intentional happiness was all about getting out of my comfort zone. Leaving the house and trying new things. Being different, other, and hopefully better, than I usually am.

The best part? My family LOVED it.

Ice Cream at the Neighbour's House

Enjoying the local park instead of, you know, our living room or something.

New Recipe: White Chocolate Cranberry Scones

Love notes on the fridge.

After a week of chasing intentional happiness my conclusion is thus:

My comfort zone is BORING.

Check out Momalom for more intentional happiness.

Great !!! pics! Glad you’re participating and glad you left your comfort zone long enough to create such great moments.

OOH, LOVE this. Especially since I have been consciously trying to break out of that comfort zone cocoon over the past 6 months – 1 year. Yes, it’s been going on a while. I can leave the house, sure, but making new friends? Not quite so easy. Being a “chit-chat” mom? Super hard. But I’m happy to say that I’m getting better. And the comfort zone? It sure is boring. And often lonely.

Love your !!!

Your girls are really pretty. It is so easy to get comfy and stick with that, but I get bored kind of quickly, and I like to mix it up.

Oh! And another way you left your comfort zone: forming and cutting your scones!! :)

You are an inspiration to this fellow hermit! Thanks! (and thanks for the recipe! Also, yours look much better than the ones on food.com!!)

I get comfortable in my zone, too, but my kids pull me out of it, and I’m almost always glad when they do. Your days look lovely. As do your scones.

Any chance you’ll post that white chocolate, cranberry scone recipe? They look so !!!

(PS: Even though I haven’t posted a !!! this week, I spent it doing the very same thing as you. Pushing out of my comfort zone. It’s so exhausting, but it always seems to pay off.)

Looks like you guys had fun! The scones sound wonderful!

I LOVE my comfort zone, but my kids force me to go outside of it quite often. It can be a very hard place to leave.

You mean we actually SHOULD leave the house sometimes? Good for you, and for having those !!! moments~

Those scones look delicious. Must. Eat.

I know just what you mean about comfort zones. I think I was born to be a nineteenth century poet or something since I want to hide in my garret all the time.

I’m the same. Before I had kids I just hung around my house, read books and watch movies. Now that I have kids, I’m forced to go out and do stuff else we all go mental from staring at each other all day. And I’ve found leaving the house isn’t so bad after all.

Oh, that’s really neat! I am exactly like you, in that I don’t like to leave the house. I need to get out of my comfort zone more often. I am loving this !!! idea.

Love notes on the fridge! Sweetness!

I went to my regular thrift store the other day and beelined for the men’s tie section. I used to tie shop for him all the time, and realized it’s been way too long since I’ve done that. Luckily, I found the perfect tie for him (and for under $2!!).

Love notes on the fridge may be the next thing…

Lovely, Kimberly. Today my intentional happiness involved going to see a silly, fun movie at the theatre and sneaking in snacks!

fabulous photos.
and I so get you on this.
the kids activities pull me out of the house kicking and screaming quite often.
and quite often those times are the ones that bless the most. and the next time I’m back to feeling stubborn again.
I like to go out alone, for walks though, that’s different.

So glad it was worth it. I’m going to have to try to get out more and see if I can find some of that adventure you experienced.

Those scones looked wonderful!

I love intentional happiness. Mine was refusing to go to the gym today. Sometimes I need to go. Sometimes I need not to go. I’m learning the difference.

So much fun! Yes, comfort zones are boring. I try to step out of mine at least once a week.
