Sick
by Kym on July 3, 2010
I liked being sick today. Despite the sink full of dishes and the sticky patches on the floor. Despite the sunshine warming the floor beneath our bare feet and making them yearn for summer grasses and the cold waters of the local lake. Despite phlegm and sneeze whiplash and the pounding please-oh-please-may-my-head-explode-now feeling.
My arms are full of cuddles, you see. The tawny heads of my older girls resting on my lap and in the curve of my arm and shoulder. The way baby Claira snuggles her face into my chest and breathes so deeply, so content. There is no sense of urgency on a sick day. No musts or shoulds. There is only ah-this-is-nices.
Funny how a person can be miserably sick and yet not the least bit miserable at all.

I’ve always felt that being a vegetable for a day (albeit a sick one) is really nice on occasion.

It’s the only time my littlest snuggles up with me, so while I feel bad for her I can’t help but enjoy it.
Are you sick as well?

I so agree. And when my boys were little they were the sweetest things when THEY got sick. Just docile snugglers. Hope everyone is well soon.

I’m not sick, but I’ve been having one of those quiet, puttering days, too.
Hope that you are feeling better today!

I hope you feel better soon and when you do maybe you can just pretend you don’t and have another day of cuddles ;)

Wow, Kim, I really like this. Sitting down and really enjoying your children rather than running from one activity to the next really is splendid, so to have to do it? Even better.

I’m usually all, “Don’t touch me, don’t speak to me, don’t bother me unless you are my mother and you have some medication.” Hope you feel better!

Two of my kids and I got that swine flu last fall and it was miserable. But we sat on the couch for three days straight watching movies, snuggled under a heavy blanket, drifting in and out of sleep. It was very peaceful.

Trying to think of a time when I’ve been sick yet haven’t been miserable.
Nope, has never happened!

I used to (sort of) like sick days because it was a time to relax but since my son never stops moving – ever. And he always demands my attention and doesn’t play well on his own, my sick days are just too exhausting to stand.
I hope you don’t have the same cold my husband has. He’s had it for a couple of weeks now which seems entirely uncivilized and unfair of the cold virus.

Sick days are a time out of time, aren’t they? Here’s hoping you are up and about soon, feeling better and back to your old self. Although the I like the arms full of cuddles bit. And the no musts or shoulds.

I like how being sick allows me to just let things go and not care so much.
Hope you are feeling better!
