What I Learned During My Summer Holiday…

by Kym on August 30, 2010

I wear makeup in direct proportion to how anxious I’m feeling. For example, while attending a family wedding approximately twenty pounds heavier than I planned to, I wore eyeliner, three different shades of eye shadow, and a double layer of mascara. If you ever see me in person and I’m wearing eyeliner, pat me down a bit, will you? It means I’m terrified.

But I realized something I already knew (I do this a lot). There isn’t a single person in my life who I love or enjoy more because of their looks. So why do I care so dang much about looking ”right”?

The cousin who has always been prettier, skinnier, and more self-assured than me is human too. A lifetime of feeling intimidated melted away in the wake of seeing her with three kids aged three and under. Children – the great equalizers.

Also human? My Granny. Who now that I am a grown up too (well, sort of, yes) is a warm, genuine, hilarious sort of gal who I wish I could have spent more time with. Note to self: The childhood version of yourself cannot be trusted to offer accurate depictions of people.

Judging people just isn’t worth the effort, because more often than not when you take the time to think about it, it turns out that YOU are the jerk. Except for judging that mom at the amusement park who bitterly complained about having to take her three year old daughter on a ride, ”Again?! I have to go on everything! Geez!” and then texted on her cell phone the whole time. I’m pretty sure it’s okay to judge people like that, though admittedly, I could be wrong…

Grandparents have this sick need to give their grandchildren felt markers. Clothes may be washable, but seat belts and car interiors don’t exactly fit in the washing machine…

Fruit Loops for breakfast, even on a special occasion, are NEVER a good idea. While it is possible, and even likely, that the children will eventually escape the sugar induced hyper-craze, the occasional twitching afterwards is highly disturbing.

Just because Neil’s family is, well, Neil’s, doesn’t mean they can’t be mine too. Inlaws, like Grannies and cousins, are people too, and fabulous ones at that. I’m starting to see why Neil turned out so well. He comes from a background of warm, open, loving people.

It is a good idea, a great forestalling of anger and bitterness, to just assume the hotel room won’t be worth what you paid for it. Pessimism can be a traveler’s best friend.

Parents who let their children play in hotel hallways for a whole HOUR, before 8am, should be made to suffer in some way I’ve yet to determine.

Roller-coasters are fun. Going on a roller-coaster with an eager six year old who LOVES the thrill is ten times as fabulous. And seeing the kids light up with glee and shout, ”This is the best day EVER!” is beyond awesome.

The joy of having the kids say, ”This is the best day EVER!” every day is more than worth the inconveniences of traveling. And having them not want to go home, bittersweet but mostly sweet.

A person can eat copious amounts of fudge with few obvious consequences if only they are physically active enough, and it is possible to go away for 10 days and not gain so much as an ounce. I will now lose a few by doing some serious happy dancing. I love you all enough not to post a video clip. Some things in life demand to be shared, some demand NOT to be.

Spending the money saved up for a new dishwasher at a bookstore is so, so worth it.

Having Claira’s first word be Dada isn’t so bad when she says Mama the next day.

Being a good mom is super easy when there’s no housework, bills, phone calls, emails, laundry, or crazy-as-all-get-out LIFE to deal with. And being home, returning to reality, is no easy thing when the holiday has been FanTAStic.

It’s all very well and good to spend the holiday planning how to rearrange the house once home, but where to find the energy to do it? Maybe I should crack open the leftover fudge…

Coming home to so many birthday wishes is even sweeter than fudge. Even the chocolate raspberry cheesecake one…

Yay for awesome vacations! It sounds like it was a blast! Hope re-entry isn’t too terrible!

Oh, and use the fudge as a reward for after you’ve done all of the hard work of re-arranging. That way you know you can spare a calorie or two.

I’m glad you had a wonderful vacation! I’m also very glad you’re back. ;)

Love this! Thanks for sharing. Now I’m going to eat a spoonful of fudge. Thanks for reminding me.

I am forever going to start calling my vacations holidays. It makes me feel like they will have to be more fun. And it makes me feel a little bit fancy. So glad you had a great time!

I spent $160 on clothes for MYSELF this month. This may be no big deal to some people, but I keep clothes a long, LONG time – like literally DECADES – so it was HUGE for me to get that much for myself. I got tired of wearing tee-shirts all summer, so buying some non-tee-shirt blouses felt GREAT (especially because they were all on sale!). Looking “right” is only important if it helps you feel “better” in my opinion.

So, you mean, I shouldn’t judge people more?

I love posts like these. You’re so full of excitement, positivity, and happiness. It’s so wonderful to see you happy and silly and fun. Of course, you know I love Dark Kim too because Dark Kim gets Dark Laura but Happy Laura loves Happy Kim, too. Long/short of it? I love you. So happy you’re home!

Love your summer lessons!

Sounds like you had a great time and learned some important life lessons. Especially about the roller coaster. :)

I’m glad you had so much fun. :) And I’m glad you’re back. You were missed!

I’m laughing about the make-up paragraph. I totally do the same thing.

by Anonymous on August 30, 2010 at 1:15 pm. #

Wow. You learned quite a lot. Some of it I already knew (the judging thing in particular …) – and yet, they’re things I need to re-learn every, oh, week or so.

Thanks.

I honestly don’t have a problem with my kids eating Fruit Loops. I only question their taste. Anyone with any taste knows that you should eat leftover birthday cake for breakfast. Yum!

Sounds like you had a great time and learned a lot. Thanks for sharing.

This was a great post! I like the little glimpses into your vacation. And you’ve got me excited for the one we’re taking soon, where I’m taking Logan on his very first roller coaster. :-)

“Grandparents have this sick need to give their grandchildren felt markers.” What IS it about this?? My mom brought a miniature whiteboard for the fridge last time she was here for the kids to draw on. I’m not sure what she was thinking. I “lost” the markers ASAP. ;-)

Sounds like the best possible holiday – even with inconsiderate parents who obviously wanted some alone time and made everyone else suffer for it.

This sounds like the very bestest kind of trip.

by Melanie J on August 30, 2010 at 5:34 pm. #

Yup, usually it DOES turn out that I am the jerk. I hate that.

by Kazzy on August 30, 2010 at 6:12 pm. #

Ouch. I’m the jerk, too. Bummer.
Also, leftover apple pie, especially the kind with only the bottom crust, and that brown-sugar-oatmeal topping? The one with lots of butter? That is what makes a great breakfast. Totally not feeling the guilt for that.

Deep sigh, and welcome home.

I loved, savored and relished every word of this, partly b/c it is all so true, partly b/c you say it so well and partly b/c I have missed visiting your blog so much! And the bookstore thing–my daughter and I both have panic attacks when we enter, there are so many books we want to buy and they are so EXPENSIVE! sigh . . .

by Heidi Ashworth on August 31, 2010 at 9:37 am. #

I’m glad you had such a wonderful time! Welcome back. :)
And I agree with you on the markers thing for sure.

“Note to self: The childhood version of yourself cannot be trusted to offer accurate depictions of people.” Hahahaha – - isn’t that the truth!

I am glad that your vaction turned out to be fun, and that you are back to delight me with your happy posts and such! :)

by Kenzie on August 31, 2010 at 11:39 am. #

The fudge…sounds so good. Your trips sounds like nirvana, especially spending the money saved up for a new dishwasher at a bookstore! What books did you buy, do tell!

PS: Any chance at some left over fudge??

by Terresa Wellborn on September 1, 2010 at 8:39 pm. #

Yay for vacations!!! Glad it went well. And that you’re giving people second chances.

I love the bit about the Fruit Loops. Dangerous, aren’t they? Haha. Glad to hear you had such a lovely trip filled with epiphanies!

by Brownpaperbaggirl on September 2, 2010 at 4:21 pm. #

I so needed to hear that. Thank you so much. :)

I’ve read and reread this. It’s brilliant.
Bookstores and libraries . heavy heavy sigh. love.

Fabulous lessons you learned! I am very impressed with you taking a holiday for 10 days and not gaining an ounce – you rock :) !!

by An Ordinary Mom on September 7, 2010 at 12:00 pm. #

You sure learned a lot on your summer holiday! I wish I could learn to relax a little more when on my own. Totally agree with the “judging” business, and copious amounts of fudge without gaining an ounce? Fabulous, brilliant and yay you!
